From the NPR internal memo (quoted on Gawker):
We have eliminated all FY09 merit increases for the senior team, which includes all vice presidents and executive staff. All other staff will receive their January merit increases as planned.
They're axing two shows and laying off 64 people, but still giving out raises?

Its the American Way.
Posted On: Wednesday, Dec. 10 2008 @ 3:37PMThat sucks...I like listening to News & Notes on the days I work late and end up driving home at night! Are they replacing it with anything or is it just going to be a broadcast of whatever's on channel 13 at the time?
Posted On: Wednesday, Dec. 10 2008 @ 3:39PMPerhaps they are getting ready for the Fairness doctrine by making room for Sean Hannity :)
Posted On: Wednesday, Dec. 10 2008 @ 3:44PM"Day to Day" never made an impression on me -- I know I listened to it occasionally, but couldn't pick it out of a lineup if you played me bits of similar shows -- but I will miss "News & Notes," which could probably have used a more descriptive title. Like Bailey-boo, I used to catch it on the way home from my night gig, and I always enjoyed it and listened to it anytime I was out during that hour. It took a while for me to realize what the show's connecting thread was, which is both good and bad; it's good that it sent the message it was for a broader audience than JUST the black demographic, but it's a shame in that its demise may have been abetted by a title that is both non-descriptive and nondescript.
Posted On: Wednesday, Dec. 10 2008 @ 4:13PMFor gosh sakes, Bob. KERA makes its money from older, affluent donors who want news, not music. Why dilute the brand and its source of income?
They need to put 90.1 @ Night and other music programming on a 'Net channel.
Posted On: Wednesday, Dec. 10 2008 @ 4:19PMSometimes I wish KERA would become more like KUT in Austin, although I think KUT plays a little *too much* music.
Posted On: Wednesday, Dec. 10 2008 @ 4:59PMMy pledges to KERA froze when the music stopped.
I'm with you, warden62!
Posted On: Wednesday, Dec. 10 2008 @ 7:46PMWith all due respect, Rick. Your frozen pledges were in the minority. Pledges increased after they went to a new format. But I do wish they had another outlet for music, too.
Posted On: Wednesday, Dec. 10 2008 @ 9:19PMHas anyone heard the "Art of Sound" by Mark Chapman on 88.9 out of Commerce (the TAMU-Commerce college station). If you want to here someone who knows jazz and alternative there is no one better.

I typed too fast
Posted On: Wednesday, Dec. 10 2008 @ 9:44PMNews and Notes has never been a good fit for KERA; the monocultural emphasis in their reporting is a relic of the past and does not fit within the pluricultural society that we have today.
Keep music off KERA, unless it is All Song Considered. We need as many news sources as we can get these days. The dial is full of good and bad music choices, but there are no alternatives in Dallas to the blend of local, national and international news from the point of view that KERA provides. If you want classical music, support our other "Public" Radio" station, WRR.
