Right now, as I write this (1-8-09) Leon Panneta is being considered as head of the CIA, and there is some doubt as to his fitness for the job, i.e. no experience, and that seems more like giving him a job as some kind of reward. I think he may be a good choice for Secretary of Commerce, but I am not aware of how well he is qualified for that either. And you, Mr. Perot, are a pretty good choice for answering that question. I am wondering if Leon Panetta might best serve our country as Secretary of Commerce if he has the aggressive drive and qualifications to make better things happen in American industry. It has been years since any real attempt has been made to restore or recapture elements of American industry that were foolishly outsourced to foreign countries, effectively turning our economic future over to service-oriented entities in the 1980s. That was cutting our nose to spite our face. What should have been done is to find ways to retain in America the domestic manufacturing of products and goods and previously generated resources such as steel and oil and not let the cheaper costs of foreign producers suck out the lifeblood from our American industry. This was all the result of allowing greedy corporate entities to transfer the jobs formerly done by American workers. Smart idea? We are now paying the price for not keeping these jobs here in America. Is it so bizarre to make a concerted effort to bring these jobs back, using robotics, fuel cells and all the advanced technological advances we have at our disposal today keep costs down? Let's bring back our manufacturing and revive our economy as quickly as possible! Whoever takes over the job of Secretary of Commerce must be every bit as gung-ho for revitalization of American industry as our new and progressive President-Elect is for doing everything feasibly possible to restore all of our economy. He will ensure that the failed policies of deregulation are immediately established to prevent this debacle again. Is Panetta tough enough to handle the Commerce post? Whoever is appointed to the job must not be a champ, not a wimp. As Ross Perot used to tell us when he ran against Bill Clinton, "What's good for American industry is good for America." He tried desperately to wake us up and we should have listened. The victor of that campaign, Bill Clinton, did a fine job and kept our country prosperous even as the outsourcing continued to plague us. Regrettably Clinton's good work was wiped out by the next administration we all know too well. Now we have finally been driven into a miasma of economic quicksand we are struggling to get out of. Bill Clinton used "America First" as one of his favorite slogans, along with "It's the Economy, stupid." Let's bring back the prosperity and make the ubiquitous label, "Made in America" live again. We need the bailout incentives that will cost billions. But just as important as those mountains of dollars, we need common sense, an often used term of Barack Obama. Under his direction, he will finally bring power back to the American people.
Well, Mr. Perot, what do you think?
