Panic in Preston Center!

Categories: Things We Like

We tried this once before, so here goes again: Can you please, pretty please, help the folks in the Dallas Public Library's Texas/Dallas History & Archives figure out just what in the heck's going in this picture? Because, right now, this is all they got to go on: "Crowds of children outside Preston Center run while looking up at the sky. Ellen Amirkhan of Oriental Rug Cleaning Co. hypothesizes that the children are looking out for the '57 tornado." Drop those good folks a note if you can provide further details. Oh, Dad? --Robert Wilonsky

If my memory serves me correctly, Mom and Grandmom took me to that same shopping center to see John Wayne and Glen Campbell, who were here to promote the film "True Grit".

Similar mob scene.

The wonderful thing about blogs is that if one of the above bloggers actually had useful information and gave the correct answer, we'd none of us be the wiser.

A couple of AM radio stations (KLIF and KBOX) competed with each other for teenage listeners. One of them used to drop one dollar bills out of a helicoptor and everyone tried to get as many as they could. They would announce in advance where they'd drop them and Preston Center was one of the places due to the number of teenagers in the area. Then, the radio station would call out serial numbers and if one of you bills had that number, you won something special. That's probably what this is; everyone trying to get the bucks as the wind swirled them around.

I don't think it's a tornado because people don't usually look straight UP at one. It's usually ahead or to the side, more horizontally. I was in Dallas in '57, and I don't remember anything catastrophic. I think, since many seem to be runnin in ALL directions (1 man on the roof of a bldg.) that it was some sort of sales stunt at the shopping center, possibly even someone throwing cash out of a passing airplane. Just a thought or 2.

"Peterk says:'A black student tried to enter University Park."

I'm afraid not much has changed in UP (HPISD) in 50 years.

Was someone making a cheesy horror movie in Dallas in the 50's?

Looks like people parked like assholes in Dallas back then, too.

yes ,being in april meant longer days, people wearing short sleeves & looking west along northwest highway at the cloud formation, can only mean the big tornado of '57. The only other thing to do in dallas was watch grass grow & it was too early in the season. Godzilla came to town in march.

I suspect that there must be a helicopter drop of some sort going on.

and it has nothing to do with the '57 Tornado

We are talking to the library at this moment so we can get our grubbies on the original photo -- because we too are wondering who that dude is in the top right corner. A spectator? A jumper? Big Tex's little brother? The version of this photo on the Library's site is a wee bit bigger but not by much.

Is that a man or a statue on top of a building in the top right?

looks like a fight broke out in the middle there.

why would people be running away from their cars in a tornado? furthermore what are so many random people doing outside in the parking lot in the first place?

and there appears to be a gigantic man standing on a roof in the top right.

im thinking some sort of event where somebody is throwing stuff into the crowd, hence the mess in the middle there.

CSI Internet needs a higher res picture before it can crack this case.

No idea, but I think this is a great concept.

A worse idea: Take random picture of Dallas that's either of a really small area or an obscure area and have some kind of cheap giveway as a contest prize.

A brand new '58 Edsel was driving down Preston causing the children to riot in a way not seen again until the Beatles came to Dallas in September 1964.

It may well be the day of the tornado. It looks like the parking lot east of what was Neiman Marcus in Preston Center East. In addition to the tornado that did so much damage in Oak Cliff and West Dallas, another never touched the ground, but went down Preston Road. It was low enough to barely touch the steeple at Park Cities Baptist Church. These people would have been right under it. I lived on the east end of Caruth and could see both tornados.

The clouds had formed a giant word in the sky: "OBAMA". It is now understood to be an omen for a similar crowd reaction that would occur in that part of Dallas on November 4, 2008.
