In Germany, a Dallas Man Continues to Thank the Man Who Saved His Life
A year ago, we noted that James Chippendale was taking the likes of the Alarm's Mike Peters, Stray Cat Slim Jim Phantom, the English Beat's Dave Wakeling, Squeeze's Glenn Tillbrook and other old new-wavers to Mount Everest for "the highest concert ever performed." The rock on the rock was put on by Love Hope Strength Foundation, an international cancer charity the Deep Ellum-based concert insurer co-founded with Peters, whose opening set for U2 at the Bronco Bowl way back when still ranks as a personal highlight, so there.
Chippendale's in the news again -- this time, in The New York Times. Yesterday, the paper chronicled his 2000 battle with an aggressive form of leukemia, which Chippendale survived only after he received bone marrow from a man in Germany named Klaus Kaiser, who The Times describes as "a simple man who repairs bicycles in the German village where he was born." So happens that Chippendale has been repaying the debt to Kaiser -- and his family -- ever since. --Robert Wilonsky
