Dallas Has a New Friend: South Africa. Also: The Fiscal Year That Was!

Categories: News

No doubt, as Sam mentioned Monday, the biggest item breathing down the council's neck today is the smoking ordinance amendment, among the handful of items on the briefing agenda. But among the other interesting highlights at least worth a look-see this morning: Vonciel Jones Hill and Tennell Atkins' slide show from their 11-day trade trip to South Africa last month. Especially touching is the last page: "A lasting impression. South Africa … a promising new friendship and trade partner for Dallas. Have a kick-ass summer! LYLAS!" Some of that's made up.

Also, City Manager Mary Suhm's year-that-was review for the council, a rather lengthy (as in, 258 pages) look back at "the major accomplishments that we as a city have achieved during Fiscal Year 2007-08." In case you were wondering. Just to pick one at random, literally: "Preliminary Results indicate over 70% of citizens are somewhat to very satisfied with police services." We'll pick out highlights later, after we curl up with the document and a fifth of bourbon. --Robert Wilonsky
