A Profile of a CBS Sportscaster for Whom We're Thankful, David Feherty
A couple of months back, D ran David Feherty's riveting account of his collision with a pickup on Park Lane; figured his being able to live and write about his smash-up was what the Sporting News was referring to today when it ran the piece headlined "A week when David Feherty is thankful for America." Not exactly. As it happens, the CBS golf announcer is involved in something called Troops First Foundation, the intention of which is to raise $15 million for injured soldiers returning home from war.Feherty's already visited Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington this week and is headed to Iraq on a USO tour; in the story, he recounts precisely when and why he decided to get so involved -- a profound moment for which you must read the story. This note, though: The Northern Ireland native has also applied for U.S. citizenship. "I wake up every day to make sure I'm still in America," he tells SN. No wonder Dunham and Miller and Tim Rogers have serious man-crushes on this guy; where, exactly, does the line start, anyhow? --Robert Wilonsky
