The Other Bailout: Donors Spending Big Bucks on Texas GOP This Week

Categories: Politics

Over the last couple of days, three of Dallas's wealthiest GOP supporters have been pumping big bucks into the Republican Party of Texas's piggy bank in an effort to keep them Dems outta the House. On Monday, Harlan Crow kicked in $50,000 -- or half of what Harold Simmons deposited on the same day. A day later, Louis Beecherl kicked in $25,000 -- a pittance compared to the $275,000 contribution made by New York hedge-funder and Rudy Giuliani's bestest bud Paul Singer, who Democrats really, really do not like. During the same time frame, there's been but a single contribution made to the Texas Democratic Party: $45,000 by the American Association of Justice PAC.

Notes this story about the last-minute shot of dough into Texas GOP coffers: "It wasn't immediately clear where all the late money is going. But in an indication that House seats are in play all over Texas, Grand Prairie Republican Karen Wiegman got $82,000 to buy TV ads and other campaign expenses from the party on Tuesday." --Robert Wilonsky
