It's Gettin' All Political Up in This Piece

Signs of the Times: Two More Weeks! Two More Weeks! Two More Weeks!

This sign at left, no doubt a longtime favorite, made its bow over the weekend in our Northwest Dallas neighborhood.

It's become a regular occurrence in our Northwest Dallas neighborhood: Every morning or so, the Obama yard signs go missing or wind up tossed on someone else's lawn; happened only yesterday, matter of fact. And, sure, same thing happens with McCain signs too; it's all part of the fun and games, right. But a sign this morning, if you will, that things are winding to an end: Every single early-polling place I drove by this a.m. was packed -- like, November 4 packed, with vehicles parked on every last blade of available grass. And at one church on Walnut Hill Lane near Marsh Lane, the line at 10 a.m. spilled out the door and into the parking lot.

If you missed it over the weekend, incidentally, The Dallas Morning News ran its McCain endorsement. It kinda wanted to go Barack: "In better times, America could afford to consider entrusting the White House to an appealing newcomer like Mr. Obama and giving control of the presidency and Congress to the same party." But instead, it went to the John: "But in this time of great anxiety, the American people need a leader of experience guiding the ship of state." After the jump, another sign we'd never seen till driving past the clearly pro-American intersection of Hillcrest Road and Forest Lane yesterday -- and some video to make it worth your while. --Robert Wilonsky

Are they yelling to her or shouting for her? So confusing.

And for those who don't watch Saturday Night Live -- and, really, why would you at this late date? -- the videos that go along with that sign:

Two consolation prizes for conservatives if Obama wins:

1. We'll be finally be delivered from the constant self-righteous whining about how anyone who doesn't support Obama is by definition a racist / bigot / idiot / hick / Bible-thumping Nazi / inbred Klan member, blah blah blah.

2. Liberals will no longer be able to claim that everything that's wrong with the universe is George Bush's fault. Some of them are going to have trouble making that transition.

Seriously, what is someone like Keith Olbermann going to do for a living if Obama wins? Go back to doing sports coverage?

What have Sean Hannity and Rush Limbaugh been doing the last eight years?

I mean, other than lying their fat asses off every day...

religion of bacon says:

The thing is, most so-called conservative politicians, including Bush, have either been asleep or acting like closet liberals for years now. Defending illegal immigration, spending money like Democrats, selling weapons systems to China, etc. And Democrats have had control of both the House and Senate for the last two years, led by colorful nutjobs like Nancy Pelosi (btw, Pelosi on Charlie Rose last week -- what is she on?) and Barney Frank. So conservative commentators have had plenty of material to work with. Whereas if the President is a very liberal Dem, and both houses are controlled by liberal Dems, people like Olbermann aren't going to have much to talk about, unless Republicans actually grow a testicle or two in 2009.

Posted On: Monday, Oct. 20 2008 @ 7:07PM
Liles says:

K.O. exists to provide a necessary counterbalance to unapologetic wack jobs like Hannity, O'Reilly, Savage and Limbaugh.

These idiots haven't done anything but ratchet up the fear in their already paranoid voting contingency. Olbermann is brave enough to take these morons head on and call them on their blatantly dishonest right-wing propaganda.

You're right - conservative commentators have had plenty of material to work with; but they've been too busy apologizing for Bush and his litany of mistakes to even notice.

religion of bacon says:

These idiots haven't done anything but ratchet up the fear in their already paranoid voting contingency.

Liberal pundits always make it sound like electing conservatives will result in the US being turned into some sort of theocratic nightmare where gays are rounded up and sent off to camps, minorities are persecuted and freedom of speech and worship are eliminated -- despite the fact that Bush has been in for two terms and nothing like that has happened. So there's plenty of fear-mongering from both sides.

And if you actually listen to Savage, Laura Ingraham, and some others, you'll find that they've been pissed off at the Republicans and Bush for quite some time. Not all conservatives are mouthpieces for the Republican party like Limbaugh and Hannity.

Posted On: Monday, Oct. 20 2008 @ 7:50PM
Liles says:

Savage hates everybody but himself. Ingraham and Ann Coulter are just Bill O'Reilly in drag. Limbaugh is a drug addict and hypocrite.

Tell me something, Bacon. Why is it all of these conservative talking heads yammer on and on about the negative influence of the "liberal media" in one breath, and then brag about the success of their own ratings 30 seconds later?

Which is it? Are they the ones with the highest ratings and influence, or are they lying about that, too?

ok, I don't know was I thinking, giving the Dems the benefit of the doubt that they would stop whining and scapegoating. You're probably right. Dems could outnumber Republicans 10 to 1 and the Dems would still be blaming everything on them.

Posted On: Monday, Oct. 20 2008 @ 9:40PM
Liles says:

After Obama wins this thing I'm hoping we can all start over with a clean slate.

I'm gonna go out on a limb here and predict he'll appoint a number of Republicans to key positions and we'll start rehabilitating this country together.

If right-wingers can just man the fuck up and drop their pretenses, the United States of America can start living up to its name again.

religion of bacon says:

Why is it all of these conservative talking heads yammer on and on about the negative influence of the "liberal media" in one breath, and then brag about the success of their own ratings 30 seconds later?

That's easy. Some conservatives (e.g. Limbaugh) get great ratings, whereas liberal talk radio has never been able to get off the ground, and TV shows like Olbermann's tend to do so-so. So within the talk show format, conservative hosts do well. But with the exception of Fox, which is somewhere between moderate and conservative, most of the major TV networks (e.g. CNN, NBC, CBS, ABC), nationally read newspapers and magazines (e.g. New York Times, Newsweek), and the entertainment industry are quite liberal.

The other factor is that Limbaugh and O'Reilly are egomaniacal blowhards who love to brag, which makes them both nearly unlistenable / unwatchable. But their obnoxious personalities don't necessarily make their positions on issues any more or less valid than if they were nice guys, although it serves as a convenient target for their opponents.

If left wingers can just drop their pretenses (or fantasies) that electing Obama is going to magically fix the greed, corruption, and short-sightedness that both parties are rotten with, we might have a chance.

Posted On: Monday, Oct. 20 2008 @ 10:11PM
Randy says:

Anyone who takes any media personality seriously would have to be deranged. These people are strictly entertainers who will say/do anything for ratings.

BTW, Senator Obama has never reached across the aisle, so I don't see why he would appoint a Republican to any post in his administration (not that it would matter). Both parties are broken and corrupt. There can be no real change until we get term limits on Congress.

Posted On: Tuesday, Oct. 21 2008 @ 5:14AM
Randy says:

I just got back from early voting. You have to wonder how the campaign people standing outside the polling location could possibly be so devoted to any politician. That's pretty sick and now I feel dirty...

Posted On: Tuesday, Oct. 21 2008 @ 9:54AM
darryl says:

like it or not, obama is just as powell described, a "tranformational figure." he may not be able to live up to the hype, but I am willing to put my faith in him. what's the choice? an old man who just might die and leave a nutjob like palin in charge? no thanks!
as far as limbaugh, et. al go. the ratings are high on those shows for the same reason jerry springer is still going and why howard stern would still be hot if he was on regular radio. it's shocking. limbaugh's views don't make him popular. it's the way he imparts information. the undereducated listen and shout, "damn right" at their car radios.
i firmly hope and believe that obama will select many centrist republicans to help him heal the many wounds of this country.
bush has been an unmitigated disaster as a president. he will be blamed for years to come. in some cases, rightly so. in others, unfairly.
you're certainly not a racist for not voting obama, but there are certainly racist who will not vote for him simply because his father is from africa. and that's just sad.
but the race is obama's to lose. and when he is in the white house, limbaugh and the other blowhards will have 8 years to bitch and moan about family values going down the drain, etc.
the big lines at early voting are bad news for mccain and conservatives in general. low turn out has always benefited republicans. around the nation, exit polls have obama up by significant margins, even in red states.
go obama go. so many depend on you. don't let the weight of expectations bring you down. both the bacon boys and liles of this world will be better off with your administration.

Posted On: Tuesday, Oct. 21 2008 @ 10:12AM
daryl says:

low turn out has always benefited republicans.

Yeah, like in 2004 when the Presidential election had the highest turnout in history and Bush won by three million votes.

chad says:

whoever gets elected will be demonized as responsible for the recession since it won't really take off until the beginning of their term. All the talking heads will be screaming "why didn't he do something earlier? why didn't he see this coming blah blah blah" even though it all got started 2 or 3 years ago.

It's kind of funny actually. Neither candidate's platform will ever come close to fruition since it's going to take 4 years to clean up and get over the various economic crisis that are coming down the pike.

The commercial property sub prime crisis is next followed closely or maybe even preceded by the auto loan sub prime crisis, then the credit card default crisis, then the unemployment crisis. The whole world is deleveraging and it will take 4 years easy for the global economy to unwind and start progressing healthily again.

btw, whichever candidate puts Powell on their staff gets my vote. Otherwise i may just not vote. Powell has my respect, Mccain and Obama do not.

The Democrat Party says:

We'd like to announce that Obama has secured another high profile GOP endorsement.

Posted On: Tuesday, Oct. 21 2008 @ 11:42AM
chad says:

let me put on my tinfoil hat.

do you think all the GOP endorsements for Obama may be because this next presidential term will be full of economic turmoil (not to beat a dead horse) and likely lead to a win for the opposite party in 2012? In other words, whichever party wins the presidential election has lost in 2012 already. It sounds pretty far fetched but you never know.
