Don't Forget, the DISD Still Has a Preston Hollow Lawsuit to Deal With
The Dallas Independent School District has plenty of other things to worry about, especially today, as the district begins laying off 450 teachers to make up for its $84 million budget shortfall this school year. (And for those who may have missed it, DISD Superintendent Michael Hinojosa earlier this week "sent" a letter to district parents concerned about the consequences about such a mass dismissal.) But here's something to keep in mind, for those who long ago forgot about the story of Preston Hollow Elementary School and U.S. District Judge Sam Lindsay's November 2006 ruling that former principal Teresa Parker segregated the school.
You may have forgotten that at the end of '06, Preston Hollow teacher Graciela McKay filed a federal lawsuit in which she alleged that school and district officials retaliated against her after she spoke out against the discrimination taking place on the campus. The suit, as it happens, is still alive and well: Late last week in U.S. District Court in Dallas, McKay and the DISD agreed on a schedule that, should all go according to plan, will end with a jury trial on March 2, 2009. But there's much to do before then: Both sides need to have their expert witnesses deposed by Halloween, and McKay has till November 14 to depose Hinojosa himself.
