Liverpool FC Star Takes Aim at a "Ruthless" Tom Hicks in New Book

What you see at right is the autobiography of Jamie Carragher, who you'd totally know and adore and maybe even worship if you lived in Liverpool, where, you know, Tom Hicks owns a soccer team. The 30-year-old defender's book is being published in the U.K. tomorrow, and folks are giddy, as he's been a Red since he was a member of the team's youth squad in '96. But what's making news one day before its publication is an excerpt from the book in which Carragher kicks Hicks and co-owner George Gillett square in the soccer balls.

"For richer or poorer, we'd sold Liverpool to two ruthless businessmen who saw us as a moneymaking opportunity. They didn't buy Liverpool as an act of charity; they weren't intent on throwing away all the millions they'd earned over 50 years ... They wanted to buy us because the planned stadium offered a chance to generate tons of cash and increase the value of the club."
Incidentally, last Thursday's item about the fans' boycott of the Royal Bank of Scotland in the wake of that promised stadium getting put on hold yet again seemed to find its way to Liverpool. Comments are internationally interesting, if you missed 'em. --Robert Wilonsky

LaceyB says:

Quite frankly, it sucks for ya, Liverpool, and I do feel kinda bad. I'm sure Hicks and co came in with some "Big hat no cattle" Bullshite, and now they're doing everything BUT keeping promises. Such is the very unfortunate nature of business.
And, Jamie Carragher looks like "Dexter", which kinda makes me adore him...cautiously.

Human Being says:

I'm not defending Hicks, but who does Liverpool think they are going to find that can afford to buy the club and dump hundreds of millions into it for a new stadium and player transfers without any thought of making money (or even breaking even)? Dubai? Please.

John Arne Riise says:

I scored the own goal on purpose because I hated playing with Carragher; he's an ass. I wagered thousands of pounds we would lose the tie to Chelsea and needed to collect. I mean, come on, who dives in front of their own goal to head the ball behind the goal with 10 seconds left in the match? I mean, really? One year left on my contract and I'm taking my winnings down to Roma to spend weekends on the sunny beaches. Ciao, bitches! Enjoy your gray skis and shabby industrial city, Liverpool -- I will not miss you.

*smug smile* Did I look completely demoralized when the ball went in the net?

Rowdy Yates says:

Carraghers comments regarding Everton supporters and their fans singing derogatory songs about Stevie Gerrard make interesting reading.
He completely ignores the fact that Liverpool supporters are the worst fans in the world, they carry banners on their travels mocking the death of Manchester Uniteds players in a plane crash in Munich58,they rock the ambulance that carried an injured player from Analfield.
They threw faeces over opposing teams fans at Analfield, not forgetting the death and destruction they caused at Heysel in Belgium.
He has got a nerve has Jamie to call anybody on fans behaviour when Liverpool fans are the lowest of the low.

Waterlewd says:

Asked if Bill Gates would like to finance Liverpool Football Club and the insatiable dreams of its supporters, Bill Gates responds: "I don't have a big enough ego to own a team in the EPL. I care about other people and am working with my wife and our charities."

A Liverpool supported was overheard saying, "That self-righteous wanker..." and then mumbled something about boycotting.

Joe says:

You know, it's kind of cute that the Liverpool fans actually seem to believe that Tom Hicks cares about what they think.

Guys, I know that maybe you're unfamiliar with how most sports franchises are run here in the states. Fact is, they are businesses. There are precious few that can legitimately claim to have a history as storied as the teams in the EPL: perhaps the Cubs, and as much as I hate to admit it, the Yankees and Red Sox. The rest are strictly used to make money for their owners, like those jackass Maloof brothers who own the sad-sack Kings.

Hicks and Gillett will not step away from an investment like Liverpool. No way, no how. There is no petition you can sign, no protest you can stage, that will change this. There is one way, and only one way, to force them out: stop giving them money.

I know that you love your team. I have immense respect for the depth of feeling that fans of the EPL have in their clubs; you do yourselves proud when it comes to supporting them. You're just going to have to accept that the old ways of running the club are, at least for now, over.

subservient experiment says:

As a die hard Rangers fan I know firsthand what these Liverpudlians are feeling. Heck there has practically been a fan boycott since the All-Star break and it hasn't made him sell the team or buy some new players yet anyways. I just don't understand how he hasn't managed to ruin the Stars after all these years.

I always thought Liverpool folk were like the inhabitants of port towns/cities a hardy breed, just goes to show how wrong you can be.
These moaning Liverpool supporters are a bunch of freakin pussies.
Hicks is calling the shots, you were happy enough when he took over your club, you had the chance to be bought by DIC and blew them out,to jump into bed with Uncle Tom,quit bitchin and deal with it.
