"Hollywood" Henderson Is Still Clean

Categories: Sports

Jeff Pearlman's book ain't got nothing on Thomas "Hollywood" Henderson's 1987 autobiography Out of Control: Confessions of an NFL Casualty, in which he detailed how, during Super Bowl XIII, he kept that infamous inhaler of liquefied cocaine stashed in his uniform. But much has changed since Tom Landry cut Hollywood before the 1979 Thanksgiving game, including his getting clean in November 1983, moving back to his native Austin in 1990 and winning the Texas Lottery in 2000.

For years, Henderson's been lecturing to kids, prisoners and other drug addicts about the perils of abuse; he's also got a series of films, audiobooks and workbooks for folks who'd rather not have to issue a public apology to an entire city, as Hollywood did back in '97. The latest film is called Yes, I'm Still Clean, and though his Web site says it runs $450, someone posting as "thhenderson" yesterday uploaded the entire film, an engaging lecture in segments, to the YouTubes. Part Two, in which Hollywood talks about being drafted by the Cowboys in 1975 and trying to get clean, follows. --Robert Wilonsky
