New York Mag's Just Jealous Dallas Got George Steel and They Don't

George Steel

There’s been more ink spilled on Dallas Opera in the last two weeks than since 1995, when the paper version of Unfair Park weighed in on the beloved institution with a 5,500-word opus. Today, New York gets into the mix on its weekly “Approval Matrix,” which the mag defines as a “deliberately oversimplified guide to who falls where on our taste hierarchies.” Predictably, considering the typical New Yorker's loathing of all things Texas, we fall on the despicable side of the matrix for stealing Miller Theatre’s “lovable executive” director George Steel from Columbia University to head the Dallas Opera. “Damn you, Texas,” the blurb reads. We’ll take that as a compliment. --Jesse Hyde
