Fred Baron: I Gave John Edwards' Mistress the Money, Sure Did

Dallas trial attorney Fred Baron, who's a very, very good friend

So, yes, Fred Baron, former finance chair for John Edwards presidential bids, is indeed the "super-rich pal" and "rich retiree in Dallas, Texas" who's been giving money to Rielle Hunter, with whom John Edwards today admitted having an affair, and Andrew Young, a former Edwards aide who claims to have fathered Hunter's child. Baron issued a statement to The News & Observer a short while ago in which he said: "I decided independently to help two friends and former colleagues rebuild their lives when harassment by supermarket tabloids made it impossible for them to conduct a normal life." Edwards, he claims, didn't know a thing about it -- same thing Edwards told ABC News today. Hey, Baron used to loan Edwards his plane; what's a little pocket change on top of that? So, yes, you were right. --Robert Wilonsky

Update at 6:12 p.m.: Man, Baron is busy this afternoon. He also just admitted to Gromer Jeffers that he was the money man. Now we know why he hasn't returned our three phone calls placed to his cell earlier this afternoon; dude's busy fessin' up to everyone else. (That, or he just hates us.) Friday news dump indeed.

Jack E. Jett says:

We should all be so lucky to have a friend like Fred Baron. His helping out his buddy John Edwards is not near as deadly as Cheney helping out his friends at Halliburton.

The Bushie will try to use this as a distraction....hoping that by judging John Edwards, we will not notice the lack of jobs, the high price of gas, unaffordable healthcare, the FISA bill, a worthless war that has killed hundreds of thousands for no reason whatsoever, the fact that Bush lied about WMD's is a crime. Edwards telling a lie about an affair is not. Destroying the integrity of our entire country is far worse that the damage Edwards has done to his very on integrity.
The media will have a hay day with this. The need McCain in office so they can keep their corporate tax breaks for GE, AOL, Time Warner, etc.

My sincere apology to the evangelicals who think our attention will be diverted over a sex scandel. We are far too smart for that now.

Hats off to Fred Baron for doing what he felt was the right thing to do. Correct me if I am wrong but no one died from this.

Hey Jack, suffer from Bush Derangement Syndrome much? There's a good therapist I've heard can help your anxiety.

Let's see...

You remember Al Qaeda, right? Ten years ago this week, they bombed US Embassies in Tanzania and Kenya. Not that we did much about it at the time. But it is worth noting, they haven’t done that to us again, nor have any of these other things, since 9/11. I blame Bush.

You remember Bush, right? The guy who goes to Asia and tells China to free her people, while the press jeers, the guy who, while in Asia also meets with Democracy Activists in Burma and gets ignored for it, the guy who drew enormous and supportive crowds in Korea, while the American press yawned?

Sure, you remember Bush! He’s the guy whose life was threatened along with Barack Obama’s but only the threat to Obama was newsworthy for a very long time at CNN. Bush? You mean the creepy moron who will be charged with war crimes and crimes against humanity as soon as congress can figure out how to do that without exposing itself or having to put some of its own members under oath?

Yeah, that guy! The guy who does more than just talk about freedom and progress. The guy who has brought real hope and change to people all over the world, and yes, here in America. But you don’t want to hear it. It’s the wrong and inconvenient narrative, the embargoed one.

Now go pop the Michael Moore DVD in and -- puhleeze -- leave the delusions in the trailer.

"We should all be so lucky to have a friend like Fred Baron. His helping out his buddy John Edwards is not near as deadly as Cheney helping out his friends at Halliburton."

And so the glossing over begins.

Though I have to wonder in which America is it that a married man can bang a woman working on his campaign while said married man's wife is battling cancer and said woman who is cheating with said married man could be paid off by an uber-rich limousine liberal.

Sure wish I lived in THAT America.

And BTW, this post is in now way meant to defend the presidency of one George Walker Bush. I think he's the worst Republican President I've ever had the misfortune of living under the watch of. But I also think political hacks like Jack E. Jett serve as nothing more than unintentional comedy for the way they'll bend over backwards to defend members of their own party.

And this tactic tends to work the other way, too (see Larry Craig).

I've admired John Edwards for a long time, and I truly thought he was a sincere, compassionate man of integrity. How could I have forgotten that some people are really good at lying and I don't really know him at all?
Truth is, he's as much of a stranger to me as someone I pass on the street--PLUS he's a politician. Is there any hope for ANY of them?
I don't know who's more stupid: him, for allowing himself to do this, or me, for thinking "No way! NOT John Edwards; he'd never do THAT!" I wonder if I feel even a millionth of the disappointment and betrayal his wife has felt over this. And just what WAS he doing at that hotel in the middle of the night 2 weeks ago to see her--since he says he had realized his "mistake," confessed and repented privately a while back?? I'm disgusted . . . and sorry it will be just that much harder to believe in the possibility of trustworthy leaders.

The Big Guy respects JJ's passionate hatred of the Bushies. I voted for the idiot, and I am disgusted too.

However, The Big Guy also think JJ is doing a disservice to his side by not noting that being married, and fucking someone other than your spouse, is lame.

The Big Guy also thinks that having your buddy pay the woman off is sleazy.

Yes, no one "died" because Edwards lied.

The Big Guy wonders if it would make JJ feel better if he were in a monogamous relationship, got cheated on, and was told by his partner "Correct me if I am wrong but no one died from this."

The Big Guy thinks not.

Daniel says:

"But it is worth noting, they haven’t done that to us again, nor have any of these other things, since 9/11. I blame Bush."

See, I blame Crocs, because they became popular right around the time when the Terr'rists were attacking our freedoms, and we haven't been attacked since then. Obviously, there is a direct correlation the popularity of Crocs and our safety.

I also blame white bread for directly causing the deaths of thousands of people, since at least 98% of murderers on death consumed bread a mere 24 hours before killing someone. I'm sure it's a direct correlation.

Or maybe the "terr'rists" aren't attacking our freedoms anymore because they're far too busy killing our young men and women in countries that had nothing to do with 9/11. Or perhaps because it takes a little time to plan things like 9/11 and execute them.

Oh, and I'm sure you don't blame Bush for not giving a second thought to the report entitled "Bin Laden Determined to Attack in the US" with specific examples including flying planes into federal buildings in NYC. Who could POSSIBLY have seen that coming? Maybe Clinton, when he and his cabinet passed along information detailing their efforts to kill Bin Laden before that?

Nah..just too hard to draw any conclusions there.

Oh yeah- back to the subject. John Edwards is scum for cheating on his wife and possibly paying off the mistress. But the poster speaking about his lies not killing anyone was absolutely right- which doesn't make what Edwards did any better.

Okay, I saw the interview with Edwards last night and the boy is not coming clean (pardon the expression)....I don't know why when these guys get in trouble they think they can get by telling bits and piece of the story. That combined with the fact that his wife is so sick is really pathetic.
I don't think he will be able to pull a David Vitter and come back to a rousing welcome in DC.
Also to answer the big guy on his hypotheical. I would feel much better if my partner came home and told me had been fucking around than telling me that he had just killed somene. I say hypothetical because noone outide of ourselves would ever want either one of us. So after 18 years we are living in forced monogamy.

What I want to know is, what did the Edwards Campaign give Fred Baron a ton of money for? It's easily findable in the FEC reports. Did the Edwards campaign really need a that much legal advice? Is Fred Baron really working as a lawyer nowadays?

Or, did they funnel campaign money through Fred Baron to the mistress? If true, that's a zillion times bigger than the affair.

Alone Again Or says:

(Yawn.)

Why should we really care about any of this? Edwards isn't even an elected official.

Call it "freak fatigue", but after Gary Hart, Elliott Spitzer, Larry Craig (remember - he's not gay, he's never been gay), Mark Foley, Marion Barry, Dick Morris, Kwame Kilpatrick, Newt Gingrich, JFK, Bill Clinton and all of the other dozens of pols who were too lazy to cover their tracks, should any of us be surprised?

It's always the people with skeletons in their own closet who are the first to cast stones. So it's safe to assume that all of you now raking Edwards over the coals have never lied, or cheated on your wife or girlfriend, right?

If so, do shut up.

"John Edwards bad."

not really just a bit hypocritical. Victor Davis Hanson describes the problem best
"I think most Americans, especially given the winning personality of Mrs. Edwards, would rather let John Edwards solve his own problems and not hear about them. But the rub comes from what we might call his trademark preachy mode, transmogrified from the jury summation to the national pulpit. In that sense, Edwards is a sort of a secular version of Jim Baker/Jimmy Swaggert/Ted Haggard—and people long ago tired of him."
http://tinyurl.com/6eaj2j

"George Bush greatest President."
Only time will tell. 50 years ago HST's popularity was about as low if not lower than Dubya's but with the passage of time, the view of him has changed. Greatest can not be decided in the present, it takes time.

"Dick Cheney humanitarian."
all depends upon how you define humanitarian. I suspect JJ's tongue is so firmly planted in his cheek with this statement that it would take a team of oral surgeons to remove it. When you demonize an opponent as the left as done to Cheney by calling him Darth Vader or saying he is the real power in the WH only goes to show that they secretly admire his strength and intelligence.

Not sure about the Darth Vader reference. I one of the few people who have never seen a Star Wars. Dick Cheney has protected this country from being attacked and has loved his daughter in spite of her being a lesbian.

Edwards, like others you mentioned, for some reason choose to tell the truth in bits and pieces. I don't understand this concept. Get it out, spit it all out, be done with it and let the healing begin.

Bush has given more to help fight AIDS than any other President. As someone who has lost many friends to this disease, I appreciate his work and his daughters.

What in the world makes you think that waterboarding a suicide bomber or Jihadist infidel might provide reliable information? You don't think these people haven't been trained to provide misinformation if faced with these consequences?

Are you just for it because for the revenge aspect? Or are really dumb enough to think that lowering ourselves to the level of terrorists is a reasonable solution?

Specific examples of flying planes into federal buildings? Well, let's take a look at that report. Here's the section you seem to be referring to -

Nevertheless, FBI information since that time indicates patterns of suspicious activity in this country consistent with preparations for hijackings or other types of attacks, including recent surveillance of federal buildings in New York.

Not only is there no "specific examples" of flying planes into federal buildings, it's clear that hijackings were thought to be completely separate from the surveillance.

Three -

For all the debate over waterboarding, it has been used on only three al Qaeda figures, according to current and former U.S. intelligence officials.

As ABC News first reported in September, waterboarding has not been used since 2003 and has been specifically prohibited since Gen. Michael Hayden took over as CIA director.
