It's Gettin' All Political Up in This Piece

Dallas Billionaire Harold Simmons Has Money, and Democrats, to Burn

Harold Simmons, a vision in white

Lots of Harold Simmons mentions in the news today; it started last night, actually and one can't imagine why, judging from the ad after the jump, which links Barack Obama with former Weather Underground-er William Ayers, a subject discussed and more or less dismissed long ago. But a $2.9-million donation earlier this month to the American Issues Project -- "founded to champion the conservative values that have made the United States of America a blessed nation" -- will get you plenty of national PR, including reviews in The New York Times and The Los Angeles Times.

Simmons, of course, is a Forbes fan favorite who was among those who financed the Swift Boating of John Kerry. With his buddy T. Boone Pickens off saving the world, Simmons this time around is working with Ed Failor Jr. -- who founded AIP and used to work with John McCain. Course, it was also McCain who called the Swift Boat-ers' ads "dishonest and dishonorable" back in 2004. --Robert Wilonsky

Robert,

That's a pretty damned weak Fact Checker piece. I frankly don't give a flip how respectable some libs and anarchists think the academic Prof. Ayers is now... his past still covers him like excrement. Guilt by association (with Obama)? You bet.

By the way, Zelda, you sound like you and Ayers would get along just fine. Perhaps you'd like to stick a pipe bomb in Simmons' mail box? ...jerk.

I dunno, Wilonski. Say what ye will about Simmons or this AIP, but looking over their source documentation for the ad, it appears solid to me. There's so much in fact that it would seem they're deliberately trying to look un-swiftboaty, if you will. Check it yerself.:

Here's an interesting quote from the Washington Post article linked in this post -

The only hard facts that have come out so far are the $200 contribution by Ayers to the Obama re-election fund, and their joint membership of the eight-person Woods Fund Board.

Nowhere in that article does it mention the Chicago Annenberg Challenge. The records for the Chicago Annenberg Challenge are being blocked from public access by the University of Illinois and Chicago Mayor Richard Daley. This is why they're being blocked -

The Challenge allowed Barack Obama and Bill Ayers to work together, no doubt closely, in the heat of political battle to help disburse more than $100 million to allies, particularly in the LSCs, in the Chicago School system.

Under the circumstances, it seems more than a bit disingenuous of Senator Obama to dismiss Bill Ayers as “some guy who lives in my neighborhood.”

Spoke too soon, looks like the records will finally be released on Tuesday. It'll be interesting to see what they show or if they've been altered.

Gee, so anyone who is contaminated by ideas that are outside the mainstream should be a pariah? The mainstream politicians have so betrayed our interests for the financiers and the pentagon who are responsible for 2/3rds of the taxes you pay.

I don't know, but when consulting for landscape design I like to remind my customers that if they aren't seeing plans and plants that they don't like they aren't seening enough.

Frankly, this country is so mismanaged and the ties that influence Washington so strong that it may well take a revolution for us to get this country back from those selling us down the river. This is a bi-partisan effort that is over 40 yrs in the making.

Who really supports 737 military bases oversees? Who supports paying the rich to loan us money rather than simply taxing them? What was so repugnant about the 90% plus marginal tax rate on excessive incomes. (this wouldn't/doesn't apply to Bill Gates--a man who built an empire but to the managers CEOs CFOs and others who've built nothing but only inherit the reigns from other managers) I'm not saying what excessive income is, $50mil/yr-$500mil/yr somewhere there is a figure we could agree on.

But rather we have a failing system that rewards monopoly, influence and manipulation rather than hard work and productivity. We should encourage labor and manufacturing rather than the gamblers and financiers that pay off the regulators and hide their money overseas.

I say this as a libertarian, and as a progressive. Those of you in the middle are compromised, not compromisers. Fair is fair, and the principle of a flat tax is one most embrace. Yet, the wealthy consistantly pay a far lower percentage of their income than do the middle and lower upper classes.

I doubt anyone on here would qualify as wealthy, so when you defend the Rep. party mantra of lower taxes beware of for whom they're advocating lower taxes. The deficits and issuing of bonds to fill the shortfall ensures growing taxes for the future.

And just wait as Soc. Security becomes more onerous. Currently 7 workers support each retiree, but over the next 15 yrs. this will diminish to 2 workers per retiree. Couple this with our defense spending and interest payments--which serve no good save to enrich the wealthy.

I don't hear Barack nor the Dems seriously addressing these questions nor the media. I am deeply disappointed with you, the media and the politicains each of whom seem to be wildly distracted and confused about the real issues.

This asshole's shenanigans are proof that he may have too much time and money on his hands. What is he fighting for? some kickback that will more than offset this minor investment in a book that is devoid of fact or a single earnest argument? Media matters has fact checked this smear campaign and found little meat here.

Again, all I am hearing is the second edition of swift boating and while it may work, can you tell me what McCain brings to the table.

What are the specifics that you like about him without mentioning POW or maverick?

What gets me about the right wing nutjobs is that they constantly berate George Soros for bankrolling the repub attack ads, yet they go strangely quiet (i.e. Limbaugh, Hannity, Levin, et.al.) with the criticism of Simmmons and his ilk for attacking Dems. Talk about a double standard...oh wait, I forgot that's what the repubs are known for...do as we say, not as we do. Keep the sheep in line.

If McCain served on a board with David Duke, had been the benificiary of a fund raiser in Duke's home and then said that Duke was just some guy that lived in his neighborhood - would that conduct be relevant to way that the voters viewed him as a candidate for the highest office in the land?

Mr. Simmons is asking a legitimate question: What "change" does Mr. Obama intend for America. Will he protect and defend the Unites States of America or does he intend to finish the job that his friendly neighborhood terrorist started in the 1960's?

It's time for Obama to lay it out.

What's he gonna do?

Really, Steve, you'll cite an anti-McCain website that reads like this? "Now, McCain is shot down over Vietnam, and the Jewish/Communists supposedly tortured him half to death? After what McCain's father did for the Communists, he could have demanded anything."

Heh,i thought you dems had given up on that, please oh please keep it up. And voters will really like the blatant anti-semetism of that site you linked to -

Now, McCain is shot down over Vietnam, and the Jewish/Communists supposedly tortured him half to death? After what McCain's father did for the Communists, he could have demanded anything.

The Zionists cooked the Forrestal story for a reason. They said McCain was on the catapult, but video shows he wasn't.

Whether Obama, Clinton, or McCain get elected doesn't matter. They will all do what the Zionists tell them to do.

And yeah, i know, anything that hurts the Messiah is an evil conspiracy theory. Unfortunately for you dems, those Annanberg records are going to show that Obamas been lying about how close he was to Ayers so there's going to be a lot more conspiracy theorists after tuesday.

Catbird says:

It won't matter Spanky because your brain had been modified by the Left to believe the worst about America, but the difference between Soros and Simmons is what they cherish.

Soros represents the barbaric edge of the global marxist advance that seeks and end the capitalist system and the liberty it affords ordinary folks like me and maybe even you.

Simmons loves Liberty and defends the economic/political system that sustains her.

As a liberty loving capitalist patriot, I would have to say: Thank God for Harold Simmions, conservative talk radio and Fox.

Posted On: Monday, Aug. 25 2008 @ 10:47AM
GeorgeT says:

Sorry, catbird - in this day and age, conservative and liberty loving are mutually exclusive. You have to pick one or the other.

Sad because in the Reagan days, this wasn't the case. If McCain came out against the Patriot Act, illegal wiretaps, etc, it might show that he would reverse the trend, but he hasn't as far as I have seen.

Posted On: Monday, Aug. 25 2008 @ 10:59AM
Spanky says:

Catbird,

If anyone out there is into brain washing, it's the conservative talk radio folks and Fox news. A few minutes of their diatribe will convince anyone of that.

I love this country and what it stands for...too bad bush and his merry band of thieves have destroyed most of that over the past eight years. I'll be voting for Obama, but even if McCain wins the election, he's far better than the dumbsh*t we've had since 2000.

Fortunately for us liberty lovers (which doesn't include you and the other neo-cons as pointed out by GeorgeT), the Dems are going to add to their majority in the Senate, hopefully to a filibuster proof 60. Then we can get back to the business of running this country rather than trampling on individuals' rights and freedom and lining the pockets of Cheney and his corporate buddies.

The Big Guy says:

"Simmons loves Liberty"???

Liberty is defined as

1. freedom from arbitrary or despotic government or control.
2. freedom from external or foreign rule; independence.
3. freedom from control, interference, obligation, restriction, hampering conditions, etc.; power or right of doing, thinking, speaking, etc., according to choice.

As a conservative, and former Republican (now Libertarian leaning independent), I find it comical that anyone can read the Patriot Act (or even the Wikipedia summery) and decide that Republican = Defender of Liberty.

And yet - the social conservatives will go down with the ship, proclaiming that they are firm in their righteous beliefs that they are saving the USofA...

And yet, the neo-dems are now somehow the party of civil liberty, competent government and fiscal conservatism???

Holeee Shittt - If Ronnie were alive, he would be shitting a brick.

ps: "global marxist advance that seeks and end the capitalist system"?????

Are you FUCKING kidding me??

The only place where the "global Marxist advance" still exists is in the Grad-student lounge at UC-Santa Cruz.

It seems to me most of the old Marxists government folks in the world have decided the money is much better being a fascists

Spanky, I think you seriously underestimate the damage that Crazy Old Mac can do. This is a guy who sings, "Bomb, bomb, bomb... bomb, bomb Iran" with a smile on his face when he knows the cameras are running.

If we can all just step outside of ourselves for just a moment and try to imagine how we would react if Ahmadinejad sang that about the USA. Would we accept the explanation that he was just "clowning around"?

Mac's spoiling for a fight and he'll drag us all along with him. There was at least a plan with the Bush Regime - enrich all of their friends feeding at the public trough. But Mac's only plan will be Defending America Against All Comers - real and imagined - with the blood of our children. He will make Iraq look like a walk in the park.

In the interest of accuracy, there are not "737 military bases oversees".

I thought that every time Ronald Reagan opened his mouth, he was shitting a brick.
I know everytime he spoke, shit flew out of his mouth. Bush is a murdering dumb ass.
Cheney is pure evil and belongs in prison for life. Old white people should no longer have any say in our democracy. They have fucked up this country too much. You know, I know it, it is just hard for your die hards to admit that you made a huge mistake that resulted in the deaths of many innocent men, women and children. Every time you see a soilder who is missing a limb, or has brain damage, you will only have yourself to blame if you voted for Bush the last time.
So while you spew all your fucking bullshit in the third person, remember you are doing it because you can't deal with it yourself.
It must be sad to be so full of hate for so long and let it rule every decision you make.

I'm sure that you're a totally selfless person who in thoroughly anti-materialistic and SO NOT into consumerism, which as we all know, is the reason that we fight these endless wars, so that we can buy shit cheap.

Did you ever notice that? How all waning empires fight endless wars until they run out of money and blood? Like England. Like France. Like Germany. Like the Soviet Union. Like Czarist Russia. The list goes on and on.

And I'm sure you're all clued into the fact that even driving a gasoline powered car is just to play into the hands of the Bushies and so you probably walk everywhere you go, because you know that just mindlessly filling up with tank after tank of gas is the same as if you'd voted for Bush and Reagan and Bush 1, and even Clinton, the closest thing the Democrats have had to a Republican in the White House since Woodrow Wilson.

Just one question; did you notice the Blood of the Innocents dripping off of your pointing, accusing finger? It comes off real easy.

Just use a little gas.

Obama had to know that Ayers is a very bad person.

Obama is a VERY smart politician

Therefore, either Obama realized that he could use Ayers to further his political ambitions at the time or Obama agrees with Ayers.

I certainly hope it is the former.

Either way, it is a very legitimate issue in a presidential race
