Lou Reese

Lou Reese, a major Deep Ellum property owner, died over the weekend while fly-fishing in Montana -- a passion of his, according to his biography on the Madison Partners Web site. Theresa Martin, Reese's assistant, says he suffered a heart attack Saturday and died Sunday; Reese would have turned 59 on July 21. At the moment, Martin says, a memorial service for Reese is being discussed, but details will not be finalized till Reese's family returns from Montana today. "I do plan to speak with family and find out what they'd like to do," she says, "and what actually happened." (Update: A family representative notes that Reese died of a ruptured aorta on Sunday morning. And the family expects a memorial service to be announced before the week's end.)

Reese, profiled in the paper version of Unfair Park in 2000 following a stint in federal prison for defrauding bank regulators and cheating the Internal Revenue Service, was among the first to begin stockpiling property in Deep Ellum. By his own estimation, Reese and wife Susan own some 900,000 square feet of property in Deep Ellum -- including the buildings that house Monica's Aca y Alla, Sol's Taco Lounge and Daddy Jack's -- and almost 150,000 square feet on Lower Greenville.

The properties, worth several million, are listed on the Dallas Central Appraisal District's Web site under several names, including SDL Partners and Madison Pacific Development. As Tom Korosec wrote in the Observer in June 2000:

Reese was an understudy to developer Harold Shuler in the early 1970s and is credited with revitalizing much of the Greenville Avenue commercial strip and pioneering investment in the Deep Ellum warehouse district just east of downtown.

In 1983, when the two parted ways, Reese came away from their partnership with properties worth $15 million. He continued to invest on Greenville Avenue and moved aggressively into renovating small commercial buildings in Deep Ellum, assembling several complete city blocks. Today, those properties are held in several family businesses, housing such well-known restaurants as Angry Dog, St. Pete's Dancing Marlin, Baker's Ribs, and Monica's Aca y Alla. And he -- or rather, his family -- is still one of the largest landlords on Lower Greenville Avenue.

News of Reese's death comes just days after it was revealed that Beck Ventures was looking to acquire some 10 acres of land in Deep Ellum -- and though no specifics have been made public, as the deal's not done, it's likely that the Beck deal will include at least some of the Reeses' properties. On Monday night, Barry Annino, who's the head of the Deep Ellum Foundation and several of the Deep Ellum property owners' go-to guy, said he expected nothing to change.

"Lou's the idea guy, so I think nothing will change, other than the leader of the pack," Annino said. "Only, Lou had a lot of energy." --Robert Wilonsky

Seeing that I live in a reese building, im both saddened by his passing and concerned that my and other folks homes maybe changing hands. I know Beck Ventures wants to come in and do some improvements, but I want to make sure one of those isnt bulldozing down my residence.

Rawlins Gilliland says:

I met Lou Reese when he called my home following a commentary I did on KERA circa 2003 that was linked to Deep Ellum. I had zero idea who he was when we met for breakfast along w/his wife Susan, but there was never a doubt that we three became instant friends.

This amazing guy was larger than life, loyal, funny, canny, devilish, witty; the ultimate great cigar and Scotch partner. And when challenged by fate, no one could ask for a more kind and thoughtful ally. He was a very modern male.

Lou managed what in Dallas seems all but impossible; to be filthy rich and absolutely an unpretentious. A diehard Democrat obsessed with the logic and business of environmental issues. God bless him.

Lou Reese was a pioneer indeed, and a visionary. He helped countless people, including myself, get their own businesses started and he supported and nurtured us until we could stand on our own two feet. AllGood Cafe and many other owner-operated shops in Deep Ellum, Greenville Ave area and around town would not have "made it" without him.

Lou loved life and lived it to his fullest. His family was his greatest source of pride and comfort. God bless them in their loss and give them the strength and wisdom to follow his dreams and visions. Rest In Peace, Lou.

Michael O'Neill says:

As someone who worked nearly a year in a building probably owned by Lou on Commerce (at the Metroplex Sundown) a (long) while back, I just wanted to say thanks for the leaky roof, so I could take multi-hour lunches while the plastic bags covered up the computers. Also - thanks for living the creedo that "Crime Does Pay".

Wally? You can't be Wally. Lou rolled over on you and went to Fed golf land over the Hawaii deal. Shoulda married the poor chick.

Robert Northrup says:

Mr. Reese always impressed me, as a father and as a businessman, and he is already very missed. I had hoped to cast him in a film my friends in LA are planning; he hosted great parties; I haven't forgotten a single conversation we had. He is gone before his time, but at least while doing something he loved and at a happy time with his family.

Darren Hreniuk says:

I came across this news by accident. Incredulous. I somehow wait for Bo to call and tell me it is a bad joke perpertrated by the dark side...reality is setting in now though... I shared a beer with him in San Jose CR only weeks ago and plans for the sustainable development of this little part of the earth were discussed and insurmountable problems were made small with his insight. This was one of his gifts. A vision that BULLDOZED the naysayers and made things happen ... when they "couldn't". I knew and undrestood his vision for this planet and we are all at a loss at his passing. Go Bo

Tyler says:

Lou Reese was one of the most amazing most caring men I have ever met. He and Susan raised such wonderful children, one of which turned out to be my best friend. I am so blessed I was able to have Lou in my life for the short time I did.
