John Wiley Price Would Have Preferred "Sinkhole," Ken Mayfield

Tue Jul 08, 2008 at 04:30:49 PM
From John Wiley Price's self-published 2001 calendar JWP: Fit at 50. Not kidding.

Speaking of responses, we spoke with Dallas County Commissioner John Wiley Price this afternoon. We were just kinda wondering why he got so angry with fellow commissioner Ken Mayfield yesterday, when Mayfield referred to Dallas County's ticket collections office as "a black hole." Price's explanation, which only gets awesomer, is after the jump.

Commissioner Price tells Unfair Park:

"It is typical Mayfield. The problem is in the language. While he tried to lateral to the scientific term of a black hole, our problem is that we understand language, and it's negative and racist. Judge [Thomas] Jones took real offense. We almost simultaneously picked up on what we called the idiom. Can't do that in terms of the language. He could have said 'a sinkhole,' he could have said anything, but it was typical Mayfield style. That is what we expect."

When asked whether he took the term as "a racial pejorative," Price said, Yes.
"Given Mayfield, it just ... you just kind of expect him to have that kind of response. He is racist and doesn’t know it. Maybe he does know it. I haven’t quite figured out whether he knows it or not. I said it immediately: 'Why not a white hole?' And when I said, 'white hole,' Mayfield said, 'OK, then, a pink hole?' That is when Jones said he wasn’t going to sit here, he wanted an apology, they began to carry the discussion that way. I said, 'It’s a white hole and let's move it on.'"

Commissioner Mayfield was unavailable for comment this afternoon. --Robert Wilonsky

JWP, You are an F'ing idiot.

Can someone please post JWP's email address?

religion of bacon says:

Was he sitting on a toilet for that photo?

our problem is that we understand language

And what language would that be? It's obviously not English.

you just kind of expect him to have that kind of response

That's the point, idiot -- you read racism into it that wasn't there, because you were expecting it.

OK, then, a pink hole?

Oh, the humanity!

Waterlewd says:

A sinkhole is be a metaphor for where something gets swallowed up and damaged but can be retrieve. In a black hole metaphor, the same something is gone...poof...it ceases to exist and has become, in itself, part of the massive black hole. A pink hole is a metaphor for...ummm...damn...i don't know that one.

JWP is Dallas' own Omarosa.

that picture should have come after the jump- with fair warning.

jamal says:

and what the fuck is a white hole anyway? add that moron to the long list of things about dallas that embarrass the shit out of me (he was already on it).

rubbercow says:

WOW! This really is one of the most moronic responses I've ever seen (second only to the flap years back over the use of the word "niggardly" during a congressional debate).

Nice Abercrombie ad John Wiley!

Has JWP not figured out he's the biggest racist of them all? What a class A idiot!

Just for the record, a white hole is the opposite of a black hole, i.e. it's where the matter sucked into a black hole is (in theory) spewed out:

I must be missing something here. Y'all sure Mayfield didn't make a comment about black hoe's?

Can our County Commissioner be THAT fucking stupid?

I love it, so entertaining! And I've seen so many County Constables out there working the streets keeping us safe from those who might commit a minor traffic violation.
Might not have anything to do with the $34 mil shortfall that's going to Lupe's folks working overtime?

religion of bacon says:

Uh oh, you do not want to bring up the overtime issue with JWP. Remember his comment to Mayfield a couple months ago, when the latter suggested that not all that overtime might be necessary?

Take your ass over there and work it. Why don't you go over there and work it?

pink hole? what is that, some sort of slam against gays? it's just negative and prejudiced. you go get him, jwp!

Somebody over on another local blog suggested that there's a difference between a black hole and a black a--hole.

WISH I woulda thought of THAT ONE!!!

Awesome. Where's my popcorn? (Or is that too white, and therefore, racist?)

Rubbercow, I was sooo gonna say that the tight-fisted, budget-obsessed county commissioners are niggardly, but you sorta stole my thunder.

jamal says:

so how long was that calendar out before he received his first cease and desist order from lionel richie's people?

SCamp says:

In defense of JWP, another term should have been used. I can't say that Mayfield is a racist but he does seem to find extra criticism for Blacks and Latinos.

cp says:

SCamp-

And what other term "should" have been used that would describe a big sinking mess with seemingly no light at the end?

Shit-hole, mebbie?

Never in the history of science has "black hole" ever been remotely considered un-PC or racist. Maybe JWP was reacting to what he perceives as Mayfield's lateral toward inherent racism, this was just really the wrong word to be bitchy about.

Harry Barker says:

Stuff like this is why the city of Dallas can't hardly function. The Dallas city council is a joke. What good has JWP ever done for the community anyway?

Harry Barker says:

I wonder if JWP has EVER said "Like white on rice" If he has that means he MUST be a racist.

cp says:

Harry Barker-

Before you go spouting off about something you obviously know nothing about, here's something you might want to know: JWP is not nor has he ever been elected to the Dallas City Council. He is a County Commissioner. And Price has done a lot of good for the black community. He's been an activist for over 25 years and while his methods have been confrontational in the past, a lot of good has come out of his efforts.

But this particular issue is just dumb.

Jason says:

Jebus!

If I was to point out the racist in this article, it has to be price!

Only price would think the term "blackhole" would be a racist comment! Wasn't his comeback a "whitehole?" Why would he say that, makes no fucking sense!

anne says:

JWP is a hypocrite deluxe. Has everybody forgotten that he was once married to a WHITE woman and has a BI-RACIAL son he obviously doesn't want to acknowledge? This was in the '70's or '80's. The son would be in at leasdt his late 20's by now. Also, you wonder where he gets the money to drive arounde in that big long faggy car he owns--the one with landscape scenes painted on the sides. What an ignorant jerk.

crusttyboy says:

Black beans, black birds, black ice, black coffee, black gold, black book, black out, are all extreme racially insensitive terms. My head hurts JWP.

PC says:

I am completely amazed that you people in Dallas put up with this kind of rhetoric reverse bigotry from one of your city commissioners, JWP.
He says what ever he wants, blasting the "white man" but heaven forbid a white man should refer to the 'black hole' (a VERY scientific term, referring to the absence of anything, including light, leaving only the appearance of complete darkness, black) as a reasonable description of what is going on in Dallas.
The acceptance of JWP's behavior and comments through out the years, without retribution, is simply indicative of the political/racial climate in Dallas and has done NOTHING to promote acceptance, but instead has deepened the rift racially.
I'm so very glad I live elsewhere in this fine state. Y'all are an embarrassment to Texas as a whole.
Get past people like JWP and you'll get past discrimination and you'll get a LOT more done for the city of Dallas.

Biff says:

I think Jones is even more of a f**** idiot, and that's hard to beat Price. What a vain and arrogant dick. Who elects these kind of people?

Tee Box M.R. says:

In the name of all that is sweet and clean... so we have county commissioners (one of which is a judge!!!) that have no idea what a "black hole" is?????

The only racists here are JWP and the "judge". Notice the first thing out of JWP's mouth was "why not a white hole?"

JWP and pepole like him are why I do not reside in the City of Dallas or Dallas County.

cp says:

Robert-

Please lock this thread already- the hicks who don't read news regularly and have now heard about it at their various jobs are posting idiotic.

John Wiley Price is NOT a City Councilman. He is a COUNTY COMMISSIONER. He represents a quadrant of the COUNTY of Dallas, which include the cities of Duncanville, Cedar Hill, Glenn Heights, DeSoto, Lancaster, Wilmer, Hutchins, Ferris, Combine, Seagoville, Balch Springs and parts of Mesquite and Highland Park. Yes, Highland park. Oh and the whole southern sector of the City of Dallas.

Also, Judge Thomas is NOT a County Commissioner, he is a judge.

Please, people, if you don't know the story and the facts, just GO AWAY. And you might want to read some other posts first before you go spouting off. It's obvious that the authors of the previous 11 posts have not read anything else posted here.

PC says:

Clearly Robert has all the information and the previous "11 posts" posters don't. This "hick" reads more, hears more, knows more than you think.
Totally amazed, once again, at the type of people that run, or want to run, our city, county and state governments.
Wake up people!

Oh, btw, I never one time referred to JWP as anything other than a commissioner. And because I was one of the previous 11 posters, maybe it's YOU that needs to read a little bit better.

Amazed says:

YOU ARE A RACIST JWP. Nothing like someone pulling out the old race card any chance they get. HEY! I am a single white male in my mid 20's YOU JWP HAVE MORE RIGHTS THAN I DO! I am part of the most legally discrimnated against demographic group in the world and you dont hear me complaining and making stuff up. The American Black man doesnt have to worry about me holding him back, I have better things to do, besides black people seem to do a pretty good job at HOLDING THEMSELVES BACK. As soon as you get over your racism issue you will advance, until then keep doing what ALL WHITE RACISTS WANT you to do and bring up stupid stuff like this. The white racists of the world laugh with glee anytime blacks get offended by something like this because it is a STEP BACKWARD for them not society.

cp says:

PC says:

"I am completely amazed that you people in Dallas put up with this kind of rhetoric reverse bigotry from one of your city commissioners, JWP."

Perhaps you should read your own post before flaming.

The City of Dallas has a city council, elected by voters of the City of Dallas. It is independent of the County Commissioners Court. Those members are elected by voters of the County of Dallas, which comprises more than just one city. So, you can't just blame Dallas for electing JWP, Dallas shares that with 13 other cities, all of which have their own independent city councils.

matt says:

yes price thats it EVERYONE is a racist....we all owe you for what our ancestors did 10 million years ago.....lets all feel sorry for all the poor black people. boo-hoo.

Mike Coleman says:

I don't suppose JWP asks for saltines for his chili or soup instead of asking for a "cracker" as this could be considered racist towards Whites?
Playing cards will change if this prick has his way...no mo SPADES!
Another reason I'm glad I haven't lived in the US for the past 30+ years...

Southern Pride says:

This is AMAZING! I'd expect Al Sharpton to be arriving in DFW any moment to take up this stupid battle.
I'm just guessing, but this knucklehead is probably a democrat. When are the blacks going to get some decent leadership that will actually lead them out of their "whoa is me" mentality. That's the real problem.

David says:

Email him at

jprice AT dallascounty.org

Let him know how you feel.

Justin says:

Okay, we know JWP is a nutjob but why isn't anyone asking Judge Jones WTF he was thinking by escalating the issue with a demand for an apology?

Without that part of it, this is a harmless and silly exchange by two rival county commissioners and less of a national embarrassment for Dallas.

LakeWWWooder says:

cp is right.

The whole thing could have been diffused if Mayfield had just laughed it off and the others might have followed suit. JWP just wants attention. Anybody comfortable with different races doesn't man the battle stations over such silly incidents.

Terell says:

Black hole is probably the appropriate term (at least in politics). Whether out of smugness or earnestness, plenty of blacks holding public office have shown themselves to be uneducated zealots, creating a vortex of polarizing stupidity from which reason and the English lexicon cannot escape. See David Howard's firing from a D.C. agency for being "niggardly" with funds. I suppose his black counterparts would have preferred he quoted esteemed crackhead D.C. mayor Marion Barry, "Bitch set me up?" As a black man, I'm harmed more than I'm helped by JWP and other incompetent fools in politics.

John says:

To CP...

I don't give a shit what he has done for his community...he is still a colossal idiot! Doing good things for your community has never and will never give a person the right to be a complete dumbass and accuse someone of being racist for this kind of comment. He needs to take a class in common sense and you probably do too!

Jack says:

Angel food is named as such because it is light and fluffy. Devil food because of its reddish coloration. Otherwise all white cakes would be angel food and all chocolate cakes would be devil food.

Black hole is named as such because not even light can escape - therefore it is black. Plus a black hole sucks up crap. One the flipside a white hole spews crap (ironically like John Wiley Price).

This type of race baiting is going to derail Barrack Obama's campaign. I hope Price is happy with himself.

cp says:

To John:

Your post is so so, um, how do I say....intelligent? Perhaps the *real* black hole is between your ears.

Fact remains, the people of 14 cities have continued to elect him to this office for six terms- that's 24 years, in case you're not counting. So, it seems that some people CAN be a "dumbass" and CAN be "racist" and STILL get elected, term after term after term. If you don't live in any of the cities previously cited, then why do I care what you think? If you do and you don't vote, then quit bitching.

JWP has been a good fiscal watchdog, and he is very intelligent. At times, he seems to be the only commissioner paying attention to anything at all. As I posted previously, I think this was a cheap shot at Mayfield because Price already thinks that Mayfield is a racist, which could very well be true. At any rate, it's Price's perception and we all know that perception is reality. Still, I think this was a stupid term to get all bitchy about because there are plenty of more offensive remarks that he could have made but didn't. (just look at all the bloggers here and elsewhere trying to justify the use of the word "niggardly"; no one says that and it's a pretty racially charged word, no matter how you try to slice it.)

My take is that Price has probably been waiting for some time to use something that comes out of Mayfield's mouth as a racial slur. Again, this was just the wrong word to split hairs over. And yes, it does make Price look completely stupid, but it looks worse for Jones.

Sandy says:

We all know that John Wiley Price is the biggest racist in Dallas. He has always been derogatory to us pale people. I can't help the color of my skin without getting skin cancer. That's like the pot calling the kettle white. Doesn't matter that the context was the fact that cooking over an open fire turned your pots, etc a dark color.

rubbercow says:

cp-

You should really look into the etymology of the word "niggardly" before you comment. The word has absolutely NO racial "charge" to it all. In fact, it has nothing all to do with race.

Cavy says:

What a bunch of BS this is! Some self righteous jerk like this comes along and everyone is supposed to re-write a scientific term that is 50+ years old just because he thinks its "racist"?!

Hey idiot a "black-hole" it called "black" because light doesn't escape it's gravity...making it dark.

So "dark matter" is racist...
and so is "black Monday" and "black jack" and the term "dark days", so on and so forth.

You know what is racist? How about...

"Unite Negro College Fund"
"Black History Month"
"Martin Luther King Day" (why are the white founders of this country forced to share a day when King is not?)
"NAACP"
"BET"

If we (whites) had:

"White History Month", "White Entertainment Television", "White Pride Day", "National Association for the Advancement of White People"--NAAWP or "White Chamber of Commerce", or "White College Fund", or white only schools these would be called racist.

It's time whites all over the country stood up to Mr. Price's version of reverse racism!

Tim Shewmake says:

When I heard this on the news I couldn't believe what I was hearing. Why is John Wiley Price so sensitive about this? He really needs to get help with his personal issues and leave them away from the office. Because of diversity in the workplace it is company policy to be careful about what you say but I guarantee, if I made a statement about a black hole in the context of a ticket system backlog no one in our human resources would be writing me up. John needs to grow up.

cp says:

rubbercow-

I understand full well the etymology of the word niggardly- it's from niggard and is similar to niggling (yes, let's not let those niggling little facts get in the way...) I also have never in my 32 years heard anyone actually say it, and I know alot of smart people who read books and use big words. It's a racially charged word because so many people don't know the etymology. Instead, we Americans coined another term that's without a doubt derogatory and sounds similar to niggardly. It's easy to confuse, and also a word not taught in public schools.

What amazes me is that I've been reading so many comments about how stupid black people are for being offended at the word niggardly. It's a word that hardly ever gets used anywhere in modern-day English and sounds so close to "nigger", it's easy to make the jump that saying someone is niggardly is like saying something intentionally but thinly veiled racist. If it's not a word that you use daily, then don't start defending it's use when a black person gets offended. That's almost like expecting black people to tolerate your bigotry, at least their perception of your bigotry. Again, if it's a word that you and all the people you know don't use commonly, then I question the jack-ass who thinks it's suddenly appropriate to say around black people. Says something about your judgment.

Look, my point is that comparing the word "black hole", a word that is commonly used in everyday language to describe something dysfunctional, to the word "niggardly", a word that is rarely used in every day conversation, in this particular context displays poor judgment and perhaps even a hint at racism. Why is it a good idea to defend this word right now when it is obviously racially charged?

Centaur says:

The adjective "black" applies to any object which does not emit or reflect light. A "black hole" is a particular type of object whose gravitational force is so strong that no light or anything else can escape. I am amazed by two things in the story. Firstly, that someone elected to public office does not know the basic meaning of the adjective black or what a black hole is and how black applies. Secondly, that an elected public official is so hypersensitive that reason entirely escapes him in such a simple matter. Then again, maybe we shouldn’t be surprised by the people that voters in this country have been electing in recent years. How sad.

rastas says:

I do appreciate JWP for one thing: I had been considering moving back into Dallas County. What was I thinking.

Thanks for reaffirming my knowledge that Dallas is a city (and, apparently county) run by crooks and imcompetents. Think I'll look for house in Tarrant County.

rubbercow says:

to cp :

sorry I haven't really been keeping up with this string..... For clarity's sake, I never said that black people were stupid for being offended by the word. What I find offensive is that we are all (black, white, whatever) supposed to be concerned with the thoughts or objections of those who can't be bothered to understand what is being said (language is fairly complex, right?). I understand your argument, but I am not moved by it. It would be a dangerous thing to start making adjustments to everything we do and say based solely upon what they are perceived to mean.

If I decide that some word (whatever it may be) is a slur against me and a group of people that I associate myself with would it be ok to demand that word drop out of our language?

I don't know you, but I find your willingness to tag me as a racist a bit alarming. How can you possibly have any idea of what my thoughts are? You are upset because people are defending a word in the English language that has been maligned (whether it is in common parlance or not). Your argument that word is "perceived" to mean something else and, therefore should not be used (except by racists of course) is ridiculous. Should we all just do whatever it takes to be at peace with those (OF ANY RACE) that refuse to exercise their minds?

josef says:

99 to 1.JWP is indeed a complete and total fool. And I fault his "constituents" for hie very existence. Hey JWP.. the cornrows.. look more than stupid on you.
I applaud the poster who pointed out how may segregationist organizations currently exist as black only race based institutions.

I am so sick of black americans like this joker. THey want it both ways. Does he have a single white constituent? If so.. that poor sucker has no representation.

Is this where we also get Sheila Jackson Lee? That bastion of low IQ racism in our Congress?

This is a perfect example of what is wrong with black america. No I will never refer to them as "African Americans". They're just blacks like everyone else is just white. This is getting sickening.

I looked high and low for an email address for this clown so I could have the pleasure of telling him that the entire world is now laughing straight at him for being such an illiterate goon.

I noticed that the Cable Negro Network (CNN) didn't even run a one liner about this. Probably because they have another "groundbreaking" patronizing one sided special on this weekend and didn't want to blow it.

I have long noticed that some people like JWP are so profoundly stupid and jive that they have no concept of how people see them.

Hose A. says:

Both Price and that judge are dumb as dirt. Clearly neither of them possessed the acumen to discern what was actually said. All their brains could process was:

...the word "black" spoken by a Whitey no matter what the context automatically equals an insult and an obvious attempt to repeal welfare, reinstitute slavery and send them back to the cotton fields. No other interpretation is possible, somebody call Jesse Jackson.

Apparently neither of them grasp that they just gave anyone who's inclined to view them as fundamentally inferior enough validation to feed on for 100 years, Price's "explanation" only served to further emphasize the brick wall that delineates his IQ.

Hose A. says:

according to cp

I understand full well the etymology of the word niggardly- it's from niggard and is similar to niggling...It's a racially charged word because so many people don't know the etymology.

So you're saying a word that has an established definition that has nothing whatever to do with race is nonetheless "racially charged" simply because of the ignorance of some people.

You feel this logically makes "Black Hole" racist because of John Wiley Price's and Judge Jones's ignorance even though it has an obvious connection to the concept Mayfield was referring to. Basically you're saying we should just assume that any blacks within earshot are going to be ignorant of the English language and dumb down our speech to accomodate this.

If you don't don't grasp how asinine and wrong-minded this is, I think it's unlikely I'll be able to set you straight.

Please go sit over in the Stupid Box with John Wiley Price and Judge Jones.

Wigman says:

Does JWP have any connection with NAACP? and/ or did they back him up on this comment or no.
