Damn It, This Woman's Gonna Save Her Starbucks on Lower Greenville

Fri Jul 11, 2008 at 04:44:35 PM

Noted Regional Comedian Dave Little, this item is not for you. Clearly, you hate the Starbucks on Lower Greenville and the people who sup joe there. No, this is for the regulars there who think that it's a nice little place to hang out and grab a cup of coffee (though I can only recommend the Pike Place Roastâ„¢ with a straight face) and strum their guitars and read their books and write their poetry and shoot their shit and don't want to see it shuttered, as Starbucks intends to do -- according to the folks who work there, for now.

Elizabeth Marshall's petition to save the joint went online today; thus far, six have virtually signed. Among them is one Julia Hussey, who writes: "I believe that this Starbucks is a place for authors, musicians, and photographers, as well as all people, to go and share a common interest in what matters most -- community." And, Dave, since you hate community, don't sign it. Everyone else who likes community, have at it. Unless it's Community Coffee, blech. --Robert Wilonsky

Oh, that photo reminds me of my dear close friend, Jesse Helms, who we just laid to rest this week. Somehow, we never let "the bag" get in the way of our love making.

ahh mais cher you can pick on da Starbucks all you want but don't lower any Louisianian's beloved Community Coffee down to there level. It's the closest taste of New Orleans most of us can get in this town without going to Victory Park's Mardi Gras, blech... damn, now you got me doin it

Actually, Paul, I do love Community Coffee's New Orleans Blend® Coffee and Chicory Ground. It's the standard stuff of which I'm not so fond -- perhaps because that was the office brew for years, and it got a little ... boring. And, I'd actually like to try some Cappulido ...

... for that local, indie-rock, fair-wage taste.

well, mr. wilonsky, i don't hate the starbucks on lower greenville. i hate the one at the airport. i don't think musicians can afford the coffee. at least, not the ones who are worth a damn.

MP says:

Dave, SWA has free coffee at Lovefield. Lets go - I will swing for the boarding passes.

dave Little says:

let's do it. we'll start our own freakin' community.

Brendan McNally says:

I just spent many years sitting outside Starbucks Lower Greenville writing my novel. I even listed the gang there in my acknowledgements. Now that the book is about to come out, the starbucks is closing. I think that really sucks. That is/was a great store. Great people worked there, cool customers, dogs mommies, babies, fellow journalists, contractors, bible students, republicans, goths, all getting along pretty well.

Sucks, sucks, sucks, sucks

Especially since I've been abroad for a year and am about to return to sign some books. Sucks, Sucks, Sucks

Paul, if you want some good Louisiana-roasted coffee, get it from Orleans Coffee Exchange via mail order. They roast daily, so when you get your ration it's always oily and aromatic, mmm mmm good. The prices are quite reasonable for freshly-roasted, highest-quality coffee, cheaper than Starbucks :-) and you can support a local business that barely survived Katrina.

"Noted Regional Comedian Dave Little,......" An arrest record doesn't make you notable.

I just spent many years sitting outside 7-11 Lower Greenville writing my ex-wife. And I intend to sober up and mail that letter someday. Sure, some say I never will. But I spit in their eye!

Rob Thomas says:

As a result of that Starbies I have met aroung 12 really cool people that I would have never met anywhere else. It is a profitable unit and it ain't about the cofee.

Thanks again for posting my petition. We have 75+ signatures so far and over 35 hand-written letters for Howard Schultz. Not too bad, considering we are just getting started!

Brendan - I know about you and your book from Emily, one of our former baristas at Greenville Ave location, so I am including your book in my "care package" to Howard Schultz. Like you, I wrote MOST (if not all) of my book at this Starbucks and thanked Andy and the gang in my acknowledgements section. It would be a damn shame to see this location close, which is why I decided to do something about it.

I have been hanging out at this Starbucks since it opened having lived in the neighborhood since 1995. I have met a huge range of fantastic people there. Even after leaving the country for a year I found many of the same faces and same atmosphere upon return. It has never been about the coffee. Its about the people and atmosphere.
Having been to most of the Starbucks in the metro area in passing at one time or another, this one was found to be unique in the type of people it draws in.
Starbucks has never been excellent coffee to me. Its "decent" but its main claim to fame is that its consistently the same wherever you go. Kind of like Mcdonalds.
Yes, community coffee is actually better coffe in my opinion.
I have recently moved to DC. It sucks to think I will have to drive all over town every time I come back, to meet all of my friends at one time and place.
Since Greenville avenue in general is all about atmosphere and location (I can can get most anything I can get on Greenville ave elsewhere with less hassle and price)....this Starbucks will be a loss to the fabric of the area.
I would even still go to this location if community coffee, White Rock coffe or Seattles best bought the place from Starbucks. Ray

One person writes that they have met cool people at Satrbucks. Hmmmm, isn't that an oxymoron? "Indie" ? GMAFB!

coffee lover says:

if you really want a good cup and a place to have community there is a much better place a block south next to the corner bakery!

Neon Java says:

The regulars at the Atlanta-Vinings Starbucks produced a video and posted it to YouTube to protest the closing of their Starbucks. With the considerable talent among the regulars of the Lower Greenville-Dallas (Store 6262) and our passionate defense of it, we ought to be doing the same!
