The Chicago Cubes

Chicago Sun-Times sports columnist Rick Telander exchanged a few e-mails yesterday with Mark Cuban, one of three finalists still in the running to acquire, for more than $1 billion, both the Chicago Cubs and Wrigley Field. Cuban wouldn't tell Telander how much he thinks the Cubbies are worth -- the Mavericks owner has reportedly ponied up $1.3 billion to lead the pack. But Telander's all for Cuban getting the nod; he writes that "among the trio of suitors at the top of the list, Mark Cuban likely should be taken most seriously." But this is Telander's takeaway, Mavs fans:

Cuban owns the Dallas Mavericks. Yawn. The Mavericks, who've won nothing and resonate globally about as much as the Lansing Lugnuts, are to the Cubs as Tinkerbell is to Godzilla. The Cubs have come up for sale but three times in almost a century, and to miss purchasing them now would be to miss for a lifetime.
And while you're on the Sun-Times' site, read Jay Mariotti's column about how he's "creeped out" by Irving native Kerry Wood's 12th trip to the disabled list yesterday. --Robert Wilonsky

Wait, when was the last time that the Cubs have "won" anything? At least the Mavs have been in their sports' championship at some time during the last sixty years.

Yawn. Sport fan pissing matches are so much fun.

Why do people keep taking shots at the Lugnuts?

dcg says:

Maybe he can take them to one game shy of winning the World Series.

GeorgeT says:

I think they should just award the franchise to Steve Bartman.
