Tom Hicks is Forcing Austin's Beloved Ice Bats to Find "A New Cave"

Tue May 06, 2008 at 12:26:06 PM

Seven years ago, my old friend Jason Cohen published a terrific book, Zamboni Rodeo, about "life on the road" with Austin Ice Bats, the official Central Hockey League affiliate of the Minnesota Wild. The Ice Bats have played in various locations in and around Austin for 12 seasons. Only, reports the Austin American-Statesman this morning, they may have fly away -- thanks to Tom Hicks.

Because, see, says the Austin daily: "The Bats had hoped to move to the $55 million events center planned by the City of Cedar Park, a 6,800-seat arena expected to open in 2009." Only, Hicks is moving the Dallas Stars' new American Hockey League affiliate into the Cedar Park facility in 2010. Hicks got a hell of a deal too: According to a Statesman story over the weekend, Cedar Park's paying $43 million "toward the construction of the 6,800-seat center," while Hicks is ponying up a mere $12 million. And as a thank-you, Hicks even gave Cedar Park city officials personalized Dallas Stars jerseys -- which they had to return on the advice of counsel.

The Stars were affiliated with the Iowa Stars till April. Because two months earlier, Hicks Sports Marketing Group announced the creation of the Stars' new CHL franchise, the Texas Stars.

Hicks' move south is forcing the Ice Bats to find "a new cave," in the words of team owner Randy Sanders, who adds, "We are currently looking for an acceptable location in the Austin area but will investigate relocating the team outside of this area if needed." Tom Hicks sure knows how to make friends. --Robert Wilonsky

that's some serious sorriness from Mr. Hicks.

Spectator says:

As a UT alum, I used to take some pride to be (way back) in the ranks that included Hicks and Roger Clemons.

Now, not so much. Still, there's Robert Rodriguez. My theory is that Hicks and Clemons are closet Ags.

But don't get me started on Ags.

While it is a little-known species, the Greater Reticulated Ice Bat (Ectophylla frigidus) fills an important niche in the northern Canadian barrens. E. frigidus is a known predator of several parasites that have in the past been responsible for the spread of Canadian Cabin Fever, a virulent disease responsible for the decimation of Hockey Limpets. Colonies of Ice Bats are found naturally as far south as Yellowknife, and unlike most other species of bats, can lead a highly itinerant lifestyle. The name comes from their shockingly white fur, and from their penchant for skipping across the surface of frozen lakes in search of food. Sadly, the species has been driven to the brink of extinction by the predation of roving gangs of Sports-Franchise Owners (Homo Avaricious).

Why the hatchet job on Tom Hicks?

If you read the article it spells out how the Bats are basically a dying franchise and Cedar Parks wants the Stars' affiliate.

Were the Bats going to put up $12 million for the arena? No, I don't think so.

Being a Stars fan - so you know my prejudice up front - I could care less about the woes of the "Ice Bats" In all honesty this is a good move for the Stars in general, as 1) it allows the minor league players ease of transition to an already receptive market for hockey, 2) It allows the convenience factor for the stars to send up and call down players from their minor league affiliate and save on costs of transport and such, and 3) In short, Minnesota has never really done any favors for the Stars in general, from their front office personnel, to their fans having a chip on their shoulder from losing the stars in the first place. So go ahead and continue to kick Hicks in the crotch which seems to be the popular thing to do these days.
No I'm not happy about the Rangers, or the dealings across the pond, but one thing hasn't changed. Dallas Stars Hockey hasn't stopped being generally competitive. Besides, I think the underground conspiracy theory these days is that Hicks will unload the Rangers when Bush comes back to Texas (don't know how likely that is or how it will help but I'm a Mets fan anyways so *shrugs again*)
