Soon, Everyone in the Country Will Know the Ballad of Becky Miller

Wed May 07, 2008 at 04:10:00 PM
Carrollton Mayor Becky Miller

So, let's recap: This morning, Carrollton Mayor Becky Miller wakes up to find that on the front page of The Dallas Morning News, she's been outed as a liar -- as in, no, she did not sing backup for Linda Ronstadt or Jackson Brown; she was never engaged to Don Henley; and she never had a brother who served in Vietnam. Then, just a few hours later, she's national news courtesy an Associated Press follow-up. (Wonkette has already branded her "The New Lying Hillary Clinton!" And, a "saucy minx." And, notes one of the myriad hi-liarious comments, "Her poop is used as currency in Argentina.")

Apparently, her challenger in Saturday's election didn't stand much of a chance before today. But that was before today, when she had to issue a missive to the city council that included the phrase, "I will be consulting an attorney." --Robert Wilonsky

'I will be consulting an attorney'...bet she's close personal with Jerry Brown.

religion of bacon says:

"I get angry when people get into my personal life," Miller told the newspaper for a story in its Wednesday editions. "My personal life does not have a thing to do with my job"

Sounds more like Bill than Hillary...

I like the following comment on Wonkette:

"Care? No. Mock? Yes."

Doug in DFW says:

Bob - Sounds like trivia time.
She is now the answer to the question - Who was Carrollton's biggest liar since Robbie Van Winkle?

Mark Allen says:

She also claimed to be the one in the Gene Simmons sex tape. But that turned out to be Gene.

Billusa99 says:

A red-headed, overweight liar... hmmmm. Does she have a sister who scammed a few Katies?

Mark says:

That was a good one Doug. Also they both have a lot in common, they both pretended to be singers.

Have you heard about the nut job who's running against her? He's a real crackpot. What an interesting coincidence this all came up just before the elections on Saturday. A friend of mine went to the polls the other day for early voting and this freak recoginized him as a Becky Miller supporter and started screaming at him in front of several people.

Carrollton has come a long way in the last few years, from DART rails being built, bond elections to give us new parks, bike paths and renovated fire stations. By 2010 we'll have bike paths that link most of our parks to the 3 new rail stations. We'll have urban development, lofts, apts, new retail around these centers. The old Furneaux Shopping center has been revitalized. Mayor Becky and our councel have made all that happen.

I guess it's more news worthy to make personal attacks on her and not even mention all the new stuff happening in our town.

Carrollton mayoral candidate's encounter with firefighters draws criticism

weekend encounter between Carrollton mayoral candidate Ron Branson and some of the city's firefighters has led to criticism from supporters of Mayor Becky Miller.

COURTNEY PERRY/DMN
Carrollton mayoral candidate Ron Branson, at a City Council meeting Tuesday, described Saturday's encounter with the firefighters as a conversation, not a confrontation. "If we're going to talk about character, I think it's important that they [residents] know that the person [who might be] running the city and the person who is a spokesman for the city has a hair trigger, that he can disrupt meetings and can make the city look foolish," said Bob McCranie, a Carrollton resident who has been active behind the scenes in local political campaigns.

Mr. Branson reportedly was upset that the firefighters association had endorsed Ms. Miller.

According to Watson Kohankie, president of the Carrollton Fire Fighters Association and who writes a weekly column for The News on fire issues, Mr. Branson approached a group of firefighters who were participating in a public education event Saturday in a Lowe's parking lot and "started to verbally accuse the on-duty firefighters of working hard to defeat him. He went on to say that there would be an article coming out in The Dallas Morning News that we would be interested in."

That story, published Wednesday, dealt with questions about whether Mrs. Miller has told the truth about episodes from her past, including singing backup for Linda Ronstadt and Jackson Browne. Spokesmen for the singers have said they don't know her.

Mr. Branson acknowledged Wednesday that he had spoken with the firefighters but described what happened as a conversation, not a confrontation.

"I told them their union endorsed the wrong person," Mr. Branson said. "I told them the head of their union was not telling them the whole story, that he should have waited until the story in The Morning News came out."

Mr. Kohankie said by e-mail that one crew member eventually had to step up and tell Mr. Branson they were taking part in a public education event, and Mr. Branson left.

He apologized the following day to other firefighters and later to the original crew.

"We feel it is unfortunate that this event occurred and the public was witness to it," Mr. Kohankie said.

Not to discount the fine works of your mayor, Jim Davis and Chris, but if I lived in Carrollton, I think I would find it to be of more than passing relevance if my elected Mayor systematically lied about her background and qualifications on an ongoing basis.
