Quincy Carter Will Never, Ever Run Out of Chances to Throw a Football

Categories: Sports

The Kansas City Brigade of the Arena Football League are 1-7 halfway through the season, and the schedule doesn't get much easier the rest of the way -- far as you know, anyway. Regardless, the team's woeful record no doubt explains the opening sentence of this media release: "The Kansas City Brigade has come to terms with QB Quincy Carter." Indeed, the former quarterback for Your Dallas Cowboys -- Jerry Jones' troubled second-round pick in 2001, dumped by Bill Parcells after a failed drug test in August '04 -- is back in business, for the time being. He'll begin on the Brigade's practice squad and work his way up.

Fact is, this is a major step up for Carter, who, exactly one year ago, got into all kinds of trouble with the Bossier-Shreveport BattleWings in the Arena2 league, which is the minors for the AFL. He caught hell for missing meetings in May '07, finally got himself cut from the team, then, in October of last year, found himself in the back seat of a squad car after Shreveport, Louisiana, police arrested him and charged him with pot possession. And what accounts for his latest comeback? Simple. Says coach Kevin Porter, "I am anxious to get a guy with a big name and big arm in a Brigade uniform." For now, though, Quincy Carter will do. --Robert Wilonsky
