Tommy Lee Jones on the "Fascist Madness" of a Border Fence

Mon May 12, 2008 at 12:49:06 PM

Noticed that Harvard U.'s fancypants glossy 02138 has a new owner as of immediately. Also noticed the current issue's cover: an interesting portrait of Tommy Lee Jones, who, as you no doubt know, was borned in Midland and edumicated at St. Mark's School of Texas, where he's been on the board of directors but ain't at the moment. (Says Jones in the interview, in which he lives up to his rep as Mr. Crankypants: "I grew up in Midland, Texas, and Dallas.") Fact is, he really only gets chatty -- and funny -- when asked about a fence along the Texas-Mexico border:

The idea of a fence between El Paso and Brownsville bears all the credibility and seriousness of flying saucers from Mars or leprechauns. Or any manner of malicious, paranoid superstition. In other words, it’s bullshit. ...

You can’t build a fence that I cannot get over, through, or under if I want to go to Mexico. In that [border] country, you cannot do it. It’s a complete folly. Ecologically, it’s a complete disaster, and sociologically, it’s a complete disaster. It’s an act of fascist madness.

Also noted in there: During the shooting of The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada in 2005, he'd "look at what we were doing and shake my head and ask the script girl, 'Do you think there’s anybody in the United States smart enough to see this movie?'" Apparently not. --Robert Wilonsky

one time i saw TLJ in a mexican restaurant in San Antonio. he came alone, was wearing a cowboy hat and aviators and i swear to god he looked 6-8, 240. nobody even thought about asking for his autograph or shaking his hand due to the fact that it seemed like he would punch you in the face if you moved your chair. in conclusion, he is a bad ass.

JB says:

I wish Republicans and Democrats in Texas would see that its the Xenophobic Repbulicans and Democrats up North who want this billion dollar absurdity built. As a result of immigration from Mexico, Democrats up north are all worried about their union wages dropping and Rebublicans think Mexicans are going to allow their main soure of income to be blown up by terrorists. Meanwhile The border states due to the same immigration 'problem', who have been dealing with this issue for years are becoming virtually recession proof. Way to go TLJ. I wish more Texans would speak out against this Yankee wall idea.

Rhinosaur says:

Yes, it makes sense to treat badly the people responsible for your immense wealth --fans and the press that reminds people of your existence.

But then again, I didn't go to Harvard...so I wouldn't know.

Heywood U. Buzzoff says:

Maybe TLJ would feel different if he had Mexican or Guatemalan actors taking roles that he would have starred but they took sub-minimal pay and did not brag about being Al Gore's roommate at Harvard. Maybe, after losing enough roles, he had to go to a local hospital and found himself in a tidal wave of folks without insurance, often illiterate, and expecting free treatment. And finally, TLJ might feel different if he were ever hit by an uninsured, unlicensed driver who was let go by the cops because their bosses wanted to keep political activists from raising a stink about how Dallas is anti-illegal.

Ryan says:

Well said, Heywood....well said. Tommy Lee Jones may be from Texas, but chances are he is well-insulated from the realities of everyday life in this state.

Gabe says:

Doesn't he know that without immigration control all of us, each and every one of us is going to find 2 million dollars in a drug-deal-gone-bad and be hunted down and killed off-camera by a crazy Mexican with an awesome shotgun and awesome-er haircut? Sheesh, you'd think he'd know that.

Rainbow Warrior says:

Fuck him for being a Spurs fan.

Manny says:

Well said Heywood! You explained it so perfect that I almost thought you were talking about Americans living on welfare and not 'illegal immigrants'!

Maggie says:

Love Tommy Lee. And The Three Burials kicks ass...

JB says:

Or maybe TLJ will just it around and collect Social Security checks funded by millions of illegal employees paying FIFA taxes with false SS numbers who will never collect.

Warhol Reject says:

Mr. Jones is a champion and a scholar... QUICK, TLJ vs. Chuck Norris cage-fight, ready, GO! (think of your answer carefully...)

(he was the cat's vomit in Batman Forever, lest we forget...)

Walker T Ranger says:

TLJ no problem. but that Anton Chigurh scares the hell out of me.

Ryan says:

Someone had earlier mentioned the situation where illegal immigrants pay into social security and never touch a dime of it in their lifetime because they're using false social security numbers. I have a hard time conjuring up any sympathy if they're here illegally and ripping off someone's personal information. Last time I checked, that was called identity theft.

Catbird says:

TLJ may have forgotten all about the Alamo, San Jacinto, the Mexican-American War and the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo but we sure as hell ain’t.

He also may think that our ol’ buddy Professor Jose Angel Gutierrez over at UTA is just kiddin’ when he says that the Mexicans is gonna hafta kill the Gringo if we don’t give ‘em back Texas, New Mexico, Arizona ‘n California but we sure as hell don’t.

And maybe TLJ was shootin’ a movie in Europe or some place when 500,000 wets and their pals here in North Texas took over downtown Dallas a couple a years ago, but we was right here watchin’ it all on Channel 8.

TLJ may mouth off about the border fence bein’ a pile of crap but he ain’t got any skin in Texas any more.

Far as I can tell, all he is now is just another yankee agitator that looks good in a cowboy hat.

Ecology 'n TLJ be damned…give me the fence.

Kristen says:

TLJ - you rock. i don't live in europe and i agree with you wholeheartedly.

JB says:

LOL! Are you serious Ryan! Isn't that the point? Let me spoonfeed you. Illegals dump allot of money into social security that us legals WILL get. They also provide cheap labor that we need to compete in a global market. In case you haven't read lately, China is kicking our economic ass and India is not far behind. Meanwhile, we got a bunch of yankee racist xenophobes that are trying to tell us Texans what to do with private peoples land and a few dumb Texans who forgot that there were Mexicans on both sides of the Alamo who are going along with it. We can spend a billion dollars on a dumbass wall that won't work, or do the morally righteous thing and spend a billion dollars to shorten up those lines at the hospitals.

Hunter says:

On a different note, funny he doesnt claim growing up in San Saba. That tiny island of poverty sure claims him...to this day.
