Mayor Tom: Boom Goes the Dynamite

Wed May 21, 2008 at 10:52:03 AM
The Gruccis were responsible for the Statue of Liberty Centennial Fireworks in New York Harbor on July 4, 1986.

Speaking of things that go bang, we just received word that tomorrow morning, in front of Hall of State at Fair Park, Mayor Tom's going to make some announcement concerning the city's Fourth of July shebang. Only, you get a pretty good idea of what the announcement's going to be from the, um, media release:

Dallas Mayor Tom Leppert and the internationally renowned Gruccis of New York (the fireworks family that has produced shows for the Olympic Games, numerous presidential inaugurations, the Statue of Liberty Centennial and numerous world fairs) will unveil plans for a special 4th of July celebration tomorrow (Thurs., May 22) on the steps of the Hall of State at Fair Park. The Fair Park fireworks program is expected to be the biggest in North Texas and rank among the nation's top 20 pyrotechnic displays.
Wait, don't tell me. Let me guess. Still, the Gruccis look kinda busy on July 4. --Robert Wilonsky

Ah, the boom goes the dynamite guy. Haven't thought of him for ages, but now that I think of it, Mayor Tom plays Guitar Hero like this guy presents the sports: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W45DRy7M1no

(To spare yourself the total horror, just skip to 2:19 or so so you're ready for the actual "boom" moment at 2:30.)

Doug in DFW says:

There once was a Mayor who went to China.
He saw some buildings and got an idea.
He saw some fireworks and got another idea.

...fill in suggested forthcoming craptacular ideas here. I'll skip to the end.

It's the Mayor that fixed Dallas!

OK sounds nice but there was nothing like seeing "Tom Thumb" lit up in fireworks in the Cotton Bowl in the old days.
