As FAA Bans Pilots and Others From Taking Chantix, Further Proof the Drug Has "Safety Problems"

Wed May 21, 2008 at 05:23:43 PM

As long as there are stories about the dangers associated with the smoking-cessation drug Chantix, there will be references to Carter Albrecht, who was on the drug the night he was shot to death on September 3. Take, for instance, this story from the Los Angeles Times posted this afternoon, about the Federal Aviation Administration today banning pilots and air traffic controllers from taking Chantix. That's because the Pennsylvania-based nonprofit Institute for Safe Medication Practices has released a study detailing "multiple safety problems" associated with the drug.

Indeed, the white paper lists "a wide spectrum of injuries, including serious accidents and falls, potentially lethal cardiac rhythm disturbances, severe skin reactions, acute myocardial infarction, seizures, diabetes, psychosis, aggression and suicide." Which is what Carter's roommate, bandmate and best friend Danny Balis said way back in September, before the government began paying attention. And the Los Angeles Times reiterates today: "Chantix gained notoriety last fall when a Dallas-area rock musician named Carter Albrecht was shot to death as he pummeled a neighbor's door in the middle of the night. Albrecht's family and his girlfriend blamed the 34-year-old musician's outburst on his taking Chantix." --Robert Wilonsky

just me says:

Did the LA Times mention how many drinks he had before he started beating his girlfriend?

Droopydave says:

just me - shhhh... we're not supposed to mention the 0.29 BA... its the drugs fault...

kristen says:

bullshit to you arseholes who have commented without knowing the full story!

from what i understand, Carter was not ordinarily a violent drunk.

and why the hell else would the FAA tell pilots not to take it??? because they are worried pilots will mix it with alcohol? that's ridiculous.

when are they going to pull it altogether? it's just a matter of time.

From the LA Times article: "By the end of 2006, Chantix registered among a relatively small group of 35 drugs, out of all medications, that accounted for 100 or more reports of serious harm per calendar quarter. Other medications in this group tend to be powerful painkillers and drugs that affect the immune system.

By the middle of last year, Chantix ranked third among all drugs in reported problems. It moved into first place in the last quarter of 2007, with 988 reports.

The study identified 173 accidents involving Chantix that resulted in injuries. Falls accounted for the largest category, with a total of 77 cases. There were also 28 traffic accidents. The potential causes included loss of consciousness, dizziness, confusion and muscle spasms."

From another (Forbes): "Earlier this year, the FDA issued a public safety advisory about the drug causing psychiatric symptoms including suicidal thoughts and suicidal tendencies. Since Chantix's approval in May 2006 until the end of December 2007, the FDA had received 227 domestic reports of suicidal acts, thoughts or behaviors, 397 cases of possible psychosis and 525 reports of hostility or aggression with many of the patients reporting hallucinations and thoughts of killing people. This also included 28 suicides."

I think I read yesterday that scripts for Chantix have fallen by a third. Great success. I hope they fall even further.

Fuck Pfizer... and the asswipe commenters who act like they know Carter & continue to insist on hurting his friends and family.

Justme and Droopydave -

Isn't it great how the internet.com gives you two, do know wrong elitist such anonymity?

I'm glad you two never met Carter.

The first two bastards who posted make me sick. 100% assholes.

mike says:

i agree with D. those ASSHOLES ought to give chantix to all their family members and see which one goes of the deep end first. THEN comment.

invisible greg says:

I agree Chantix is bad and should be taken off the market, but anyone who mixes drinking and alcohol is looking for trouble.Sorry your friend and parents son is dead. God should make a rule, that a child should never die before his or her parents.

Justin says:

Ummm...wrong to mix drinking and alcohol? Kind of hard to do it any other way.

Drug taken to stop smoking is linked to traffic mishaps
Daniel Williams hoped Chantix would help him quit smoking and become healthier. Instead, he believes, it nearly killed him.

The Big Guy says:

The Big Guy does not believe Carter was a saint. It is clear he was known as a heavy drinker.

The Big Guy thinks the most damning praise The Big Guy has ever heard is "Carter was not ordinarily a violent drunk". Was he ordinarily a meek and mild drunk?

The Big Guy is saddened at the loss of a talented man, however.

The Big Guy thinks that drug is probably bad news
