The City of Dallas and Its Shiny, Distracting Thing

Mon May 26, 2008 at 10:24:37 AM

Apparently, we haven't wasted enough time trying to choose a new name for Industrial Boulevard. Because now, through Friday at 5 p.m., you can offer your half-cent's worth in the city's so-called "Public Interest Survey" by picking and clicking on one of the six contenders: Cesar Chavez Boulevard, Eddie Bernice Johnson Parkway, Riverfront Boulevard, Trinity Lakes Boulevard, Trinityview Boulevard and Waterfront Boulevard. The brain trust on Marilla Street will make the final call come June, but, says the city's site, this is how much your input will matter:

"The Dallas City Council will make the final decision on the street name, but will take into consideration the results of this survey; the testimony presented at the public hearing; the recommendations of the City Plan Commission, the Subdivision Review Committee, and the Subdivision Administrator; and the street name standards in Section 51A-9.304."
In other words, as Schutze put it earlier this month: Quick, look at this shiny, distracting thing! Least the city can do is show the results as the "vote" is being taken; but, nope, ain't even bothering with that. Instead, let's just look at Guy Reynolds' pretty pictures of Industrial Boulevard, currently showing on Flickr. --Robert Wilonsky

I'm totally writing a robot to vote so many times there's no way the first two on the list can win.

Gonna be honest here, I've always wanted to go have a few beers at Robbie's. Can anybody vouch for the place?

Chica says:

Will Cesar Chavez Blvd become as infamous as an MLK blvd in any given city? I mean are we setting ourselves up here? I think we should name it Jim Schutze Avenue.....

They've even plastered copies of the DMN with stickers reminding us of our ability to vote.

The City really views its residents as children: when it comes to approving the largest publicly-funded hotel in U.S. history, it's all done in a back room- out of sight of the voters. No input or debate allowed.

As a substitute, they let us vote in a non-binding referendum to change the name of a street through an industrial district.

I weep for our future.

I chose Trinity Lakes Boulevard simply because there will never be any Trinity lakes. And if by some mircle they are built, they will be little more than mosquito infested ponds for flood control rather than recreational lakes similar to those in Minneapolis. It will serve as a reminder as to the farce that is pushed on the electorate. Its not like they will let us call it Fatcat Alley or Crow's Chronies Way for what it really is, which is an attempt to dress up the name for the Industrial Blvd. developers so they can make even more money off their land value jackup via taxpayer dollars boondogle. At least this is, for the most part, a timewaster rather than a multi million dollar taxpayer funded tollroad to increase developer land values.

i've been sending emails to find out what names were the top names to "mytrinityriver@dallascityhall.com" but i have not heard a word but i knew i would not, the city council has probably already picked " Eddie Bernice Johnson Pkwy." or worse "Cesar Chavez Blvd." to appease the hispanics
