Volleyball in a Parking Lot or Bowling in a Bar? Pick 'Em.

Categories: Sports
No, this is not the photo that was supposed to run with today's Bible Girl column. It's Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh, competing this weekend in Arlington's volleyball throwdown.

For those who despise mainstream sports and aren’t the least bit titillated by playoff drama, this is for you. Both of you. If you’re stubbornly bound and determined to avoid the the Stars and Mavs this weekend, you could, I guess, watch some volleyball in a parking lot or go virtual bowling. I know, woo and hoo. The AVP Crocs Tour Cuervo Gold Crown Dallas Open comes to town tomorrow -- and, hey, they're an Unfair Park advertiser, even better. Except that, it really isn’t coming to our town -- not anymore. The sand volleyball event, which used to take place in the formerly vacant lot now occupied by the Ritz Carlton and which includes some U.S. Olympic hopefuls, will now, curiously, be played in Lot N of Rangers Ballpark in Arlington.

While you debate whether it’s worth a drive to Arlington to catch a glimpse of this, ponder this insanity. Lakewood’s famed Tipperary Inn has launched a new bowling league. A Wii Bowling League. I’ve heard the Wii is good exercise for seniors, and apparently those who’ve had one too many Shepherd’s Pie and Guinness. --Richie Whitt
