Unsatisfied? Not For Long You're Not.

Pardon, for a moment, as we take a pause for something musical and decidedly non-local -- though Tommy Stinson did used to have a Dallas girlfriend, so there is that, and the 32nd-best best 'Mats show I ever saw was at an old roller-skating rink off Northwest Highway and Abrams Road back in, like, '91. (And, yes, this old did get DC9's permission to post -- though only with the caveat that I direct your attention to our musically inclined sibling post-haste.) But, as we were reminded earlier in the afternoon, today's the day Rhino Records is re-releasing the first four Replacements albums as bonus-laden Deluxe Editions. Which'll make this the third time I had to buy Let it Be, fine by me. So, then, before it's back to bidness as usual, a stunning live video from 1981. Follow? Because, ya know, kids don't. --Robert Wilonsky

Who the hell is that playing bass? That doesn't even faintly resemble any version of Tommy Stinson I've ever seen...

Does anyone who writes for DC-9 even know who the Replacements were? I doubt it. But all of them can probably sing the chorus to "Iris" by the Goo Goo Dolls.

Looks like a video of impersonators to me... the "singer" wasn't nearly drunk enough to be the REAL Westerberg.

I think that's him, all right. Ever see his 8th-grade yearbook photo?

BTW, that video comes from Twin/Tone's collection of videos taken from one show in September 1981:

During the first week of September 1981, Twin/Tone took the mobile recording unit and rented a bunch of video gear and recorded 15 bands live (five nights) at the 7th Street Entry in Minneapolis... These QuickTime movies are from the show on September 5th.

The band had released "Sorry Ma..." earlier in the year and were already working on future projects. These clips are presented as they were recorded live... in set order and very much with the tuning that troubled the night. The Replacements were the middle band of three (Husker Du closed the show) and played two 25 minute sets.

You will find the entire set here:

I occasionally write for DC9, and I have When The Shit Hits The Fans. On vinyl.

ChrisU says:

God bless Rhino records. Since kids get music off the wire don't know how they can discover bands like this. Hopefully 'Juno' inspired some to check out Iggy Pop.

Curtis says:

Noah, how many of the DC9 articles make you wonder how you could continue to write for something so beneath you? Was it the recent entries about Pelican or Lions or The Shackletons. What about the "comedy" clip from Dave Little. Really. I want to know, this isn't an insult to you.
