More Than You'll Ever Need to Know About the 23rd Senatorial District's Convention This Saturday

Thu Mar 27, 2008 at 01:46:23 PM
You know who we feel for right now? Gary Fitzsimmons, who's got a long Saturday ahead of him. Like, marathon long.

There are 178 precincts in the 23rd Senatorial District -- including Sandra Crenshaw's, No. 3549. But as it turns out, despite Crenshaw's claims in the item below, only one person has challenged the results of her precinct caucus, despite the March madness that ensued on the night of the Texas Democratic primary. And that challenge comes from a Hillary Clinton supporter, who alleges there are no minutes from the precinct caucus and wants to disallow delegates from the precinct from being seated. But the challenge -- which was sent in yesterday, the final day challenges were allowed -- doesn't provide evidence to substantiate the claim.

Which means, according Dallas County District Clerk Gary Fitzsimmons, who is also serving as chairman of the 23rd Senatorial District's credentials committee, it may not be a valid challenge after all. Which means that come Saturday's senatorial district convention at the Ellis Davis Field House, from which six delegates will be chosen for the Democratic National Convention in August, Precinct 3549 will likely seat delegates after all. It just may take "a while," Fitzsimmons says, sounding like someone really looking forward to Saturday morning.

Much more -- so, so much more -- after the jump.

As it turns out, several of the 23rd's precincts' results are being challenged -- how many Fitzsimmons can't say just yet, as he's still going through the paperwork following last night's deadline. But here's how all the challenges will be handled.

On Saturday morning, the credentials committee will meet to discuss and vote on the challenges. If they're considered valid protests -- meaning, there's evidence to prove wrongdoing or mishandling of the results from the March 4 precinct conventions -- then no delegates from that precinct will be seated at the senatorial district convention. But if they're just complaints without further corroboration, they'll be disallowed.

Which begins an entirely new process. (And please note: We're dealing solely with the 23rd Senatorial District here.)

Because, see, when someone shows from a problematic precinct that's been flagged for whatever reason -- among those reasons, they sent too many delegates or insufficient information was provided by the precinct convention -- they'll be sent across the street to D.A. Hulcy Middle School. There, they will go through a verification process, "where we'll go to the database to see if we can find any permutation of their name," Fitzsimmons says. If and when the credentials committee determines that the individual is eligible to be seated, they'll be sent back to wait at the field house to get their credentials.

"And, at some point," Fitzsimmons says, "the committee will ask the people from Precinct 3549, or some other problematic precinct, to caucus and determine who the delegates are." Which sounds very much like do-over. In fact, Fitzsimmons says, "That's exactly what the state party calls it in the advisory we received."

Fact is, Fitzsimmons says, he was actually able to "go through [Crenshaw's] sign-in sheets and reconstruct distribution of Clinton and Obama delegates," which means 3549 isn't quite the mess folks were led to believe. "It's a simple procedure," Fitzsimmons says. But he says 3549 will have to get in line -- "because it's not the only with some questions."

He also wants to correct something Bill Howell said below, where the temporary chair of the 23rd Senatorial District told Unfair Park that Crenshaw's precinct didn't elect delegates.

"There was an election of delegates," Fitzsimmons says. "I've had a number of calls from delegates from the precinct who said there was an election to determine delegates and alternates. People have contacted me from the precinct and said they did, so I am inclined to honor it."

Incidentally, the 23rd's Senatorial District convention should be especially interesting, because one of the first items of business on Saturday morning will be the election of a permanent district chairman -- and State Sen. Royce West, who represents that district and has endorsed Obama, has indicated he'd like the job, which Fitzsimmons expects him to get "by acclamation." --Robert Wilonsky

So I don't vote down any strict party line, but after this Texas Dem primary process, why would we let Democrats be in charge of anything?

James says:

Why let Democrats be in charge? Well, their f*ckups didn't cause the deaths of 4000 Americans. Man, does logic occur in your reality?

cp says:

Hey James, shut up and quit being such an asshole. There's a process in this country and this is it- it's watching the sausage getting made. You wanna bitch about it on blogs? Fine. You wanna do something about it? Are you going to the 23rd convention? Are you a delegate from your precinct? Do you know anything at all about how this crazy process works?

I went to the 23rd convention four years ago and was an alternate to the State Convention. Know what I learned there? That the 23rd is the second-largest in the State and that the State could have turned Democrat a long time ago, were it not for the ridiculous infighting and power grabs that continue with the 23rd. The 23rd is one big huge inbreeder family- if the kids aren't retarded, then the family eats them or feeds them to the chickens. Utter Bullshit.

At the State Convention, during our caucus, a "rump caucus" was called. I was new and young (27) and very wide-eyed at the time. And my eyes were opened. Some allegations of "fixing" the deal so that certain people were nominated and some allegations of an illegal Chair and crapola like that. Racism is very alive in the Democrats "big tent".

After all the bickering and after learning about the meaning of a "rump caucus", everyone suddenly wanted to be all friendly and happy because, after all, we were "all Democrats". I cried bullshit, rather loudly, to Terri Hodge and others much, much closer to the top of things in the State Democrat Party. If the largest senatorial district in Dallas, the second-largest in the State, couldn't have a simple caucus at the State Convention and legally elect delegates, the WTF??? Anyone??? It really made me pissed off and the more I learned and the more that I was talked down to by party elders, the more pissed I got.

Later that night, when Chris Bell hosted a free crawfish boil and Shiner Bock party across the street, we had to re-caucus with parliamentarian oversight. I was lucky to get out in time to have one beer. It was like we were the bad kids in school, sitting in detention for fighting, while all the other kids were out swimming and having a grand time.

I looked at the way other districts seemed to be getting along swimmingly. Even watched two of my closest friends from the 16th exuberantly go off to the National Convention- even proudly watched them on the tele....

I came back from the 2004 State convention and decided tat I didn't want to be a Democrat any more. I called my Republican friends and bitched about it. They told me that the same things happen in the GOP.

Now I am more middle-of-the-road than ever. But also, now I can see long past the platitudes and the rhetoric. And I use my own brain alot more to critically think about stuff, rather tan just swallowing a bunch of junk like so many others. All in all, it was a good experience, but one that made me want to reconsider politics, especially the "big tent" philosophy of the Dems. Sometimes the tent isn't really big enough and I feel like the more readily that Democrats can admit their flaws, the esier it wil be.

I do not believe in a two-party system. This belief is a direct result of what I learned about how parties- especially the Democrats- work, or more fittingly, don't work. I was not "eager" and "energized" and "full of hope"; I was stunned and shocked and full of cynicism. This is supposed to be a party tat accepts everyone, regardless of race, religion, sexual orientations....but NOT SO in Dallas's 23rd Senatorial DISTRICT.

ericthegardener says:

cp,

I'm sure many of the things you said are true but you owe James an apology.

Be a grownup and apologize for calling him an asshole.

cp says:

Ericthegardener-

No, I do not owe James "an apology". This is not an online forum, this is a sort of "no holds barred" kind of blog; if I am offensive, my posts will not be allowed....such is not the case. And if you or your pal "James" don't like it, then don't read it. Simple.

Personally, I'm kinda tired of all the liberals on this blog calling anyone who may have an inkling of a *gasp* conservative comment every name in the book. Case-in-point, that "religion of bacon" character seems to get assailed at every post- so dontcha think EVERYONE else who blogs on here might owe that guy an apology? Furthermore, I am very much a MOR voter at this point (see above). But if I say something remotely close to disparaging the anointed savior of mankind, the Democrat Party, you betcha I'll be reading about it here... as is....

Just because we like the Dallas Observer and follow this blog does not mean that every reader and poster agrees with the type of philosophy coming from the likes of "James", et al. It's a big, wide world out here in the Big D and we don't always have to agree on our various brands of politics.

And if you can't take the heat in the "blogoshpere", then quit posting! And quit reading! Go find a place where you all agree with one another and pat each other on the backs, and kvetch ad infinitum. I mean...if you want a world where everyone is the same.....

And by-the-way, your pal "James" is, in fact quite a real asshole for assuming that anything remotely negative said about the Democrat Party is a gleeful nod to the "death of 4,000 Americans, Man..." That IDIOT assumes that I can't be logical because I might think that Democrats have credibility issues??? My above post was about how ridiculous the 23rd Senatorial district is, something that's kinda sorta made clear in the original post.... and when someone assumed that the Democrat Party can't be trusted to be in charge of anything, suddenly we read unfounded testimonials from "James" that the Dems cannot F*ck up, because "they" didn't cause the "deaths of 4,000 Americans, Man" WTF, did "James" Found the Democrat Party? Why would he take such an innocuous comment so personally? The whole war shouldn't even be about politics. We're there now, and what are we gonna do about it, NOW? Complaining about who started it does nothing for us Americans now. So, I'm just a little sick of this crap. Because it is crap, and only assholes and idiots keep it up. Like our pal, "James".

How about, while I'm learning how to "be a grown up", y'all both go back to grade school and learn how to read, for starts.....

erictherealist says:

Nah, he's just an asshole.

Randy says:

cp mentioned Terri Hodge. She's gonna look really good in an orange jump suit when she goes to prison for having her rent and utilities paid by crooked developers. Have you ever read her profile? No higher education, no profession experience, and no other elected posts. Very impressive.

Maggie says:

District 23 is being discussed over on Kos right now. Oh man.
