The Wright Amendment: He's Not Coming to Dallas After All

Wed Mar 26, 2008 at 01:04:55 PM
Rev. Jeremiah Wright has decided to skip the award ceremony in his honor.

Well, that was fast. This morning came word that Rev. Jeremiah Wright's scheduled Saturday appearances at Friendship-West Baptist Church and Paul Quinn College might not take place due to "security concerns." Now, on the same Web site to which we directed you yesterday concerning the change of venue -- the event was initially scheduled to take place on the TCU campus, as the Brite Divinity School was doing the honoring -- there's the following note:

A Brite Divinity School official has received notice that Rev. Dr. Jeremiah A. Wright, Jr. will not attend the State of the Black Church Summit and Awards Banquet. All events scheduled for Friday and Saturday will continue as planned. The new location of the Summit is Paul Quinn College. The Awards Banquet will be held at Friendship-West Baptist Church.
A media release with further explanation is due shortly. --Robert Wilonsky

Toots says:

Security issues? I believe that. I wouldn't want to come down to the South if I was him either.

Casey Thomas says:

Toots,
What issue do you personally have with Dr. Wright? Have you heard his sermons their entirety?

religion of bacon says:

Casey, is there some part of his sermons where he says, "and you know that thing I said before about 'God DAMN America'? Well, I was just kidding -- I love America!" Or are you saying something more analogous to "he only beats his wife on every third Wednesday?"

Read carefully says:

Casey, where and how did you come to understand that Toots is opposed to Wright? He/she made a comment about security, and you read that as opposition to Wright? No wonder this country and this city has the leaders it does - people don't read, and leap to conclusions.

jamal says:

Who the fuck is Jeremiah Wright and why would anyone give enough of a shit to bother harming him?

Vain.

Here are some more batshit-crazy claims from one of Rev Wright's newsletters:

South Africa and Israel worked on an "ethnic bomb" that only kills blacks and Arabs? Um, how would that work, exactly?

This stuff is straight out of the Farrakhan playbook. Only a tinfoil-hat nutjob could believe this kind of crap.

Well ... guys have been shot for less offensive stuff in the past. I can understand playing it safe ... especially in Dallas.

If I were a sponsor, and I wanted to back out of a now-awkward commitment to a volatile and mildly insane speaker, what better way than to cite "security concerns?" The speaker gets to imply racism and near-martyrdom (he's like MLK, see?), the sponsor is spared possible embarassment, etc.

chris says:

I think the only people "embarrassed" at him coming are the very people at the core of the problem.

religion of bacon says:

According to Wright's buddy Farrakhan (who has been given an award by Wright's church), the white devils and the Jews are at the core of most of the world's problems.

Heywood U. Buzzoff says:

Reverend Wright is the gift that keeps on giving. Thank your, Barry, for explaining how your wife, who went to ivy league schools on tax payer dollars, never felt proud of her native country. Oh sure, wearing a flag pin in your lapel may make you less GQ-lishious. Wanting to invade Pakistan and turn your back on Iraqi and Israel is very politically fashionable. Heck, you could afford to toss one of your grandmothers under the proverbial buss but hey, you got like three others right. Audacity of Hope? Heck, you are now your own ethnic bomb!

typical white person two says:

I would love to seen him in a no holds barred fight with Rod Dreher.

I would love to see the two of them just beat the crap out of each other in the name of Jesus.

Toots says:

Hey Casey, I fear for Rev Wright's life from assholes like BaconButt who is a racist but not man enough to admit it. Kind of like some jerk who calls black people "niggers" in a bar until a couple of them come in, then they shut up and hide under the table.

Anne McKinney-Page says:

The article found here: http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/front/5648912.html said that his Houston appearances were also cancelled, as well as a several day/multi-event trip to Tampa, Florida.

I think he is just laying low to reduce Media attention to the Campaign.

religion of bacon says:

Hey Toots, have a nice day!

cp says:

Why does Toots hate you so, RoB??

Catbird says:

RoB: you crack me up!
