Jonestown Gets New Residents

Mon Mar 10, 2008 at 01:01:27 PM

Spent the morning in the mud and muck out at the new Cowboys stadium in Arlington. And, of course, it wasn't for the highly anticipated announcement that current Cowboy Tank Johnson and maybe Cowboy Pacman Jones would be entering The Octagon together next season. No, it was merely owner Jerry Jones beginning to assemble all the toys Dallas’ll never see thanks to Laura Miller, Margaret Kelliher and Co., as he unveiled the Texas A&M-Arkansas football game that will be played each October in the new sports palace.

“We spent a lot of money on this place to make sure we had that ‘wow’ factor,” Jones said. “This is one of the rewards.”

We all looked pretty silly standing around in hard hats, safety goggles and mud-caked shoes, but the Hogs ‘n Ags renewing their old SWC makes perfect sense. Texas A&M says 25 percent of its ticket base lives in the Metroplex, and new Arkansas athletic director Jeff Long points to us as the school’s largest out-of-state alumni base.

The series, which will kick-off October 3, 2009, will run for 10 years, with the schools having another 20 years of options. The deal guarantees each team about $5 million annually.

A&M athletic director Bill Byrne called the new stadium a “mecca.” New Arkansas coach Bobby Petrino labeled it “the best football stadium in the world.” Long said it was “the ninth wonder of the world.” In other words, yeah, Dallas was super-smart to pass on it.

A&M-Arkansas will fall on the Saturday preceding Texas-OU, meaning it will further minimize one of the Cotton Bowl’s last remaining events -- Prairie View vs. Grambling. There was a time when Dallas spending $50 million on a facelift for a dying stadium seemed somewhat less insane. But Texas-OU will eventually leave, and that Texas Tech-Oklahoma State will never arrive. The Cowboys, the Super Bowl, A&M-Arkansas, a BCS National Game … Face it, our football soul resides 15 miles west. Said Arlington mayor Bob Cluck, “This is why we voted for the stadium.” --Richie Whitt

The football 'soul' may be in Arlington, but everything else will be in Dallas. Where are you going to eat, drink or shop in Arlington? The Pappadeaux on I-30?

As for the game, like I need another reason to avoid Arlington. Aggies and Razorbacks...gag.

Big Razor Back says:

Hillary should get Laura Miller as her running mate. You could bill it as the Lez and Sez ticket. Hillary is a closet Lesbian, and Laura miller sez what she thinks people want to hear. Or you could call it the dumb bitch ticket. I like dumb bitch ticket better.

Obama should run with Joe Piscapo, and acll it hte ebony and ivory ticket. who wouldnt vote for that.

Adam says:

I agree with Mark2. I think Laura Miller did the right thing not playing ball with Jones. This relatively new practice of private sports clubs asking the public to foot the bill for their new playgrounds is revolting and only serves the ball club. In the end municipalities are left with vacant eyesores that cost more money to maintain and eventually bulldoze an redevelop, i.e. Reunion Area, Texas Stadium.

Regardless of where the stadium is people will always come to Dallas because relative to Arlington it's a city.

FireAvery says:

I love comments like that that come from someone who hasn't been to Arlington in 5 years and hasn't seen the progress around the stadiums and what is coming before it opens in '09.

Chris says:

Sundance Square is closer, better street life, cheaper hotels, and plenty of restaurants. And when Glory Park in Arlington opens, I don't see the point in going to Dallas.

Mark2 says:

FireAvery - I have been to Arlington in the last month and haven't been particularly impressed with what I saw.

Chris - Good points, but Glorypark will be filled with the same ol' crap you can find in Downtown Ft. Worth, Southlake or Frisco. That might be ok with the Aggies or the Razorbacks, but for the 'big name' events, like the Super Bowl or even a Final Four, people will be staying at the Mansion or W and eating at Nobu or N9NE steakhouse in Victory.

Again, I hope this try turns out better than what was promised with the Ballpark, but as far as Dallas being completely left out, I don't see it happening.

Dallasite says:

Mark2,

Now close your eyes, click your heals together three times, and say "Dallas WILL get Arlington's leftovers," and it will happen...

If you believe the other fairy tales that you are spouting off, you might as well believe that one too.

Rhinosaur says:

I'd rather be flogged than drive to Arlington, and I don't live very far from there.

It won't be a problem for Cowboys season ticket holders, since they can all afford helicopters.

Mark2 says:

Dallasite - I guess we will find out in a couple of years. I'll keep my ruby slippers out just in case.

Ex-Dallas resident says:

Big deal. The Super Bowl is just going to be a bigger drain on the depleted coffers of Arlington. The NFL will want (and get) all sorts of perks, the income will all go to Jerry and Co. and Arlington will get some of the drippings.

The biggest winner as far as government goes is Tarrant county. They aren't putting out any money and they'll get all the folks going to Ft. Worth and environs. Nobody in their right minds will want to stick around Arlington.

The SB is overrated as an income generator for a community and a few college games aren't going to put any nicer lipstick on that pig.

As for the comment about Laura and Margaret, it was a cheap shot given that Jerry had already worked out a deal with Cluck.

Jerry got money he would have given to the NFL, slapped a hefty ticket increase and PSL on tickets and isn't putting out a cent while the net worth of the Cowboys went up 3-400 million.

Suckers!
