Five Things We Don’t Want to See at Tonight’s Mavericks-Celtics Game

Thu Mar 20, 2008 at 09:42:19 AM
Hard to believe that just two years ago, Avery Johnson was Coach of the Year.

1. Jason Kidd riding the pine for three-quarters of the second half while Tyronn Lue runs the show. Remember the big trade? Ya know, the one I never liked? Wasn’t it because Kidd’s experience, leadership and ability to “impose his will” was made for showdowns like these? Well, let’s see it.

2. Josh Howard inbounding the ball on key late-game possessions. Last time I checked, Kidd was one of this sport’s best all-time passers. There’s no one in the league you’d rather have trigger your inbounds play. Besides, if he’s not passing he’s either setting picks or -- gasp -- shooting. The Mavs’ set-play execution against the Lakers looked as ragged as my team of fifth-graders. Inexcusable.

3. Dirk Nowitzki air-balling a potential game-winning three-pointer. I know it’s hard to criticize him on the heels of Tuesday’s heroic 35-point performance, but if Dirk is to ever mature from a star into superstar, he’s got to do better on game-deciding, walk-off shots. Seems like he’s money on “the shot that sets up the shot,” but notsamuch on “the shot” itself. For starters, how about hitting the rim? In consecutive last-second, three-pointers against the Lakers this month, Nowitzki’s attempts have fallen a) a foot short and b) two feet wide right. Just sayin’.

4. Avery Johnson on his feet, calling a play every stinkin’ fourth-quarter possession or windmilling his arm as a ridiculous reminder for his team to run. Avery’s era has reached critical mass. With inexplicable benchings against San Antonio and the Lakers, he’s all but castrated Kidd’s cred. And (see No. 2) his Xs and Os have deteriorated into dodgy at best. At Wednesday’s practice at the American Airlines Center, Avery was as surly as I’ve seen him, responding to one TV talking head’s query with, “That’s out of context … next question!” The pressure is getting to him. But is Avery still getting through to his players?

It's worth noting that the Mavs were down 25 when Kidd when to the bench in the second half and only down by 5 when he returned.

jamal says:

ergo, the mavs are a better team with lue at point than with kidd. hmmm. i'll file that under "deductive reasoning taken too far."

jamal says:

pete-

my apologies if i misread your post. after re-reading it, i'm guessing you were just defending avery's decision to leave kidd on the bench in this particular game?

benchwarmer jones says:

Everyone is so hard on Avery, but the West is so strong anyway, I am not sure if we had Michael Jordan coaching this team that we would have any better a chance.

Avery needs to chill, he needs to trust the Kidd, and let him run this team. You dont trade for a hall of famer, and then tell him how to do it. This is possibly the best team or most talented Kidd has ever had, if he cant do it with these guys, he cant do it.

So one second we're criticizing the decision to have Howard do the in-bound pas, and then the next we're criticizing Dirk for not being able to take a behind-the-ankles pass and turn it into 3-pt game winning gold? Also, I second Pete above; Kidd's performance was underwhelming. Why is a different question, but it's true the Mavs didn't need him for a large part of their comeback.

Rhinosaur says:

The Mavs could have Jesus Christ at the point and God in the low post and still have a hard time being good in the West this year, or better than the Celtics.

So when the Mavs ultimately fail, people will label the Kidd trade a failure. When you look at what was given up, in reality it won't be a failure...unless Harris takes the Nets to the title. Isn't that the measuring stick with all trades?

Where would the Mavs be with Devin Harris at point still? Probably not in any better shape than they are now.

FireAvery says:

Dearest benchwarmer,
Avery deserves every bit of criticism he's getting. Remember Miami? Remember Golden State? And since when is Michael Jordan considered a coach?
I hope I'm wrong and he can make something happen this year, but the clock is ticking.

thomas says:

Jackson, Sloan, Nelson, Popovich, Adelman, Scott, Johnson, hmmm, let's see, what name doesn't belong with the others??????? Johnson is a joke - the other coaches on this list smile when they go up against him.............

jamal says:

"scott" doesn't exactly fit in either holmes. oh crap- am i a racist?

brian says:

i turned off the tv after the first half, but luckily caught the last two minutes. So easily we forget the two 3s Dirk hit to get the came close. You cant expect Dirk to hit a three w/ two defenders in his face on bad inbounds pass. for the Record, Dirk has hit big shots when they count - see game 7 clips vs SA in 05-06, and game 5 clips vs Warriors last year, and reg season home game vs Suns last year.
