Three years ago, Dallas architect and UT Arlington School of Architecture adjunct professor Brent Brown created something called buildingcommunityWORKSHOP -- or bcWORKSHOP. Brown's perhaps best known for getting some of his students to rehab an abandoned house in South Dallas last year: They took a crumbling 1930s bungalow and turned it into an office for Frazier Revitalization Inc., as well as a "public meeting space for members of the community." His bcWORKSHOP is an extension of that project: Says its Web site, it "seeks to improve the livability and viability of communities through the practice of thoughtful design and building."
The group's also been documenting its work with videos it's begun posting to YouTube; below is a tour through the alleys of the Jubilee Park neighborhood near Fair Park. Incidentally, bcWORKSHOP and the Trinity Trust are bringing affordable-housing and green-building messiah Jonathan Rose -- whose "mission is to repair the fabric of cities, towns and villages, while preserving the land around them" -- to Dallas on April 2, at the Trinity Center on Oak Lawn Avenue. --Robert Wilonsky
I helped them last year with the house on Imperial. Drive by it sometime. These guys are some of the best and brightest, and they really want positive change for the people in the neighborhood.
