Craig Watkins and Toby Shook Damn the Judge Who Freed the Texas Seven's Getaway Car Provider

The very definition of "shock probation": Dallas County District Attorney Craig Watkins was shocked to find out that Raul Rodriguez -- who provided the Texas Seven with a getaway vehicle upon their escape from the John B. Connally Unit, shortly before they gunned down Irving police officer Aubrey Hawkins on Christmas Eve 2000 -- has been released from prison after he served only five months of a 10-year sentence. Happened in July, matter of fact, courtesy Karnes County Judge Ron Carr, who freed the father of Michael Anthony Rodriguez without notifying the Dallas County District Attorney's Office. Says Craig Watkins today, the release is "a disgrace for us in Dallas County and throughout the state of Texas."

Says Lori Hawkins, wife of the slain officer: "The State of Texas has let me down again."

A jury gave Rodriguez 10 years in prison and a $20,000 fine back in July 2003, but he didn't actual enter prison till February 2007, once he'd exhausted all of his appeals. And former Dallas County Assistant District Attorney Toby Shook, who led the office's prosecution of the Texas Seven, is as furious as Watkins: "I'm outraged at this process. The fact that Raul Rodriguez is walking around a free man is just highly offensive to the memory of Aubrey Hawkins." The judge has yet to speak about Rodriguez's release.

Also, there appears to be a British-made documentary about the Texas Seven making the rounds. --Robert Wilonsky

chris says:

I'm saddened for the Hawkins family in this situation, especially leaving a child without a father in his life is one of the most devastating things that can occure. It sickens me that anyone loses anybody in a violent crime, one of the things I thank God for every day is not losing my dad in the line of duty as a DPD officer (hes now retired)

That being said, what im about to say should not be construed as defending the judge or even the Sr. Rodriguez. In this situation,he went through due process that the state provides and probably received a release due to time served. That was designed in part, because this states idiotic reasoning that its "old west/tough on crime" mentality actually makes a difference, which it has not. That, in turn, has caused a serious overcrowding issue with mostly non-violent criminals with offenses such as drug possession and petty theft. I think people are also under the impression (once again, thank the media)the Sr. Rodriguez is getting away free and clean, which is incorrect. He will have a state jail record thats going to follow him around for the rest of his natural life, I know thats no consolation to the families involved, but you have to blame the whole system in this issue for his release.

Pete says:

What is the proper way to protest the release of this despicable bastard who is in no small way responsible for the death of Officer Aubrey Hawkins?

To whom should we send emails and petitions to rightfully put him back in prison where he belongs??

Outrageous!

Toots says:

I'm always amazed by those self righteous assholes in the jury selection process (for some reason I'm called every year) who want to throw the book at every person being charged. The old man provided the car, he served his time. Thinking that he should serve 30+ years is stupid.

GMAN says:

No you are self rightous asshole Toots. The "oldman" as you call him served only few months. If you read Craig Watkins press release that is linked to the above article, you would see that by providing the car 7 convicts were able to escape and then murder a police officer. Logic tells us Toots that if they don't get the car then the 7 convicts don't get away and the Irving police officer is still alive.

If you read the DA's press release you will also see that what the Judge did when granting shock probation was illegal.

Now Toots if you truely believe that serving four or five months in jail for providing a truck that allows 7 violent convicts to escape prison and murder a police officer is a just sentence, then lets hope they keep you off juries. In fact why don't you stay at home next time you get a summons. We would all be a lot safer.

Dave says:

First, Toots you're wrong. If you don't know the complete facts about the case or the law, keep your ignorant statements to yourself. I happen to personally know all the families affected by this tragedy. If the old man hadn't provided the vehicle, this would not have happened, period. And secondly, he did NOT serve his time. Finally, if you don't like our justice system, tear your ass to another country and see how much you'll miss all of the "self righteous assholes" here who proudly serve our judicial system when called in for jury duty.

Al Smith says:

If you provide the get away car for a prison escape and the the criminals murder people while on the run. I think you need more than a few months in jail. In fact I think you need more than 10 years in jail

Robert says:

Well you're sortof correct. I'm not defending anyone with what I'm about to say. Even if he didn't supply the vehicle we don't know what would have really happened. These guys got the vehicle after they were out of prison. This guy should have been in jail for along time. I would agree to 10 years if it was one person who escaped. He should have been in longer than that.
