The Best Coach at SMU You’ve Never Heard of But Should Totally Admire

Categories: Sports
Schellas Hyndman, his name is my name too.

This guy? Nope. The new coach? Uh-uh. We’re talking the most successful athletics teacher in all of SMU, one Schellas Hyndman.

Hyndman, with more wins (466) than any coach in school history, was last weekend named this year’s recipient of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America’s Mike Berticelli Excellence in Coaching Education Award, which just has to be the most cumbersome name in the history of sports plaques. Alongside Kyle Rote Jr., Gordon Jago, Tatu, Lamar Hunt and Carla Overbeck on Dallas’ Mount Soccermore, Hyndman always has the Mustangs among college soccer’s elite.

In 2006 the Ponies were ranked No. 1 for four weeks and this year went 14-6-1, losing in the second round of the NCAA tournament. Hyndman, who will next season enter his 25th as SMU’s coach, has never had a losing year on the Hilltop.

Last coach to be that good for that long with one team was, lemme think, this fella. Furthermore, Hyndman is an National Soccer Coaches Association of America Director of Coaching Emeritus and has coached in England and Brazil. The new football coach has only won in Hawaii. So there. --Richie Whitt
