Looking Ahead, 'Cause It’s Too Damn Sickening To Look Back.

We wouldn't pay $250 for a Fire Wade Phillips Web site. Because, then, where will Tracy Phillips go?

Still trying to figure out how the Cowboys lost a playoff game despite limiting the Giants to only 56 yards in the second half. But let’s put away the mirrors and get out our crystal ball. I think that would be best.

In the 2008 regular season we know who the Cowboys will play. We just don’t know exactly who’ll play for them. In addition to home-and-away games versus NFC East opponents Philly, New York and Washington, the Cowboys will host the 49ers, Seahawks, Buccaneers, Ravens and Bengals and play on the road against the Cardinals, Rams, Packers, Browns and Steelers.

In April’s draft, the Cowboys will have two first-round picks. At the start of the season, however, the selection acquired from the Browns titillated us as a top five possibility. Now? Would you believe 22nd? Dallas also has its own pick, 31st. Which brings up one of the NFL commandments: It’s never too early for a mock draft.

As for free agents, the Cowboys have a few decisions.

The biggest no-brainers are paying a $3 million roster bonus to Terrell Owens and re-signing Marion Barber. Other free agents include Flozell Adams, Patrick Crayton, Keith Davis, Ken Hamlin, Julius Jones, Nate Jones, Tyson Thompson, L.P. Ladouceur, Chris Canty and Jacques Reeves. Despite his incessant false starts, Adams is vital. Despite his loose lips and slippery hands, Crayton can be a No. 3 receiver. Despite his soft coverage on Amani Toomer’s second TD catch Sunday, Hamlin is the team’s best safety. The others -- including Jones -- are replaceable.

Of course, the Cowboys may also be in the market for a new offensive coordinator, with Jason Garrett interviewing for a second time today with the Baltimore Ravens. Good news is Dallas doesn’t need a new head coach. Or do they? --Richie Whitt

It was reported last week that Crayton resigned to a 4 year deal. hopefully there was a gag order in the paperwork.

AJ says:

We locked up Crayton before playoffs (4 years; $13 mil, I think?). I'd franchise Adams, lock up Barber/Hamlin/Canty, re-work Roy W.'s contract (can't trade/cut him due to cap hit) and lock up L.P. Ladouceur. Never hear about L.P. but that's how it should be. Hell, I'd even resign Reeves if he takes bare minimum and enjoys being our 4th/5th CB.

ChrisU says:

yeah Crayton already got his money, hope he can hold onto it better than a football.

C.V. says:

Aren't you a little queezy that Jeff Ireland is now gone and that football player-man decisions like those listed above are going to be be even more influenced/decided by Jerry? Egads.

Richie Whitt says:

My bad, guys. Obviously I was counting on a grace period to void Crayton's deal in light of his Sunday contributions.

kerry_okie says:

There's going to be so many running backs in this draft - with so many coming out early - that good candidates would still be available below the 20th pick.

For someone with the kind of speed he has, Julius Jones has the slowest first-step imaginable. It takes him way too long to get to the line. I'd also look for a new center and move Gurode back to guard.

Bildo says:

I'd take Tracy Phillips over Jessica Simpson any day.

And twice on game day...
