Lone Star Radio Trims Its Redbeard

Thu Jan 31, 2008 at 03:16:37 PM
Redbeard's no longer shining at Lone Star 92.5.

Big change over at Lone Star 92.5: J.D. Freeman, Dallas-Fort Worth's market manager for Clear Channel Radio, says that as of today, local radio legend Redbeard is no longer the station's 2-7 p.m. host. Which comes as something of a shock, as it was only last April that the former Q102 music director and disc jockey returned to the air after insisting he'd never return to Dallas radio. As Redbeard told Unfair Park back then: "I received calls basically just about every year, and I was flattered, but I always said, 'Thank you and no thank you' just about every year. But this was an offer I could not refuse."

Turns out, Lone Star Radio wound up refusing his services: Freeman tells Unfair Park today that the station is going "to take a different direction," and expects to announce a new drive-time host in coming days. Also, the station's ad-free concept, hailed as revolutionary upon its announcement in April '07, is pretty much a thing of the past. Freeman confirms that, yes, after inching away from concept in November, KZPS had indeed begun running more recorded ads. "We just needed to change the line-up and make other adjustments to make the station more viable," Freeman says. "We wish Redbeard well -- he's a tremendous talent, and it wasn't anything he did, but there are things we can do to improve the station."

Such as? As they say in the radio bidness, stay tuned. --Robert Wilonsky

KZPS is probably more open to the host snorting coke off of the console. Motorcycle Greggo should apply....

religion of bacon says:

Clear Channel should be charged under RICO statutes for what they've done to FM radio.

Lee says:

Speaking of legends getting canned, Dan Patrick's syndicated show has already disppeared from The Ticket.

Danny says:

No offense to Mr. Beard, but should we consider maybe tightening the criteria for "legend" a bit...?

I had no idea people even listened to FM radio anymore. I was under the impression that Clear Channel destroyed it at least a decade ago.

As for me, I recall Redbeard being kind of the beginning of the end of decent FM radio in Dallas. His shtick was that he had a big-ass red beard...excellent angle for a career in radio. More than that, I just remember his bland, happy-talk delivery...completely devoid of any personality or sincerity. Maybe I'm overstating it, but it seemed to be the introduction to the new opinionless-automaton style of broadcasting that took over FM radio (and television, for that matter) every bit as much as Clear Channel did. For whatever reason, people seemed to like it. Or so I heard.

I dearly miss the glory days of the Zoo Crew...LaBella and Rody, Tempie Lindsey, Jon Dillon, the "overnight delight," etc. Thank god for The Ticket.

Tim W. says:

"GGAllinThicke" is such a great handle for so many reasons. GG's pain was genuinely growing...

Danny says:

I meant to compliment the "GGAllinThicke" bit also. Dammit.

Toots says:

Fuck the Hardline and that stupid chipmonk sound effect they put on their voices.
They have jumped the shark, cleared the landing and put the bike on the trailer.
BAD radio rules along with Donnie Do Do.

Greg Williams says:

alllriightttttt! I am back

eegor says:

Redbeard was the only show I listened to. How do Bo and Jim survive?

Bitter old man says:

Such as?

Such as... stop playing nothing but 30-40 year old songs.

Sure it was great, oh, say 30+ years ago, but it's time to move on. Play something new - give us a reason to listen. Otherwise, who needs Clear Channel when you have an Ipod?

jim says:

Maybe they'll switch to a strictly Bob Seger/ZZ Top/Stevie Ray Vaughn lineup??? Oh wait, they've basically already done that. What is Clear Channel's problem??? They screwed up KEGL. They screwed up the EDGE. Now, they've screwed up what could have been tweaked into a good station (Americana/Texas music/Country/Classic Rock). It was basically a Jack FM for rednecks(which doesn't HAVE to be a bad thing) which is quickly morphing back in to a (bad) classic rock station, again. So sad!!!

When in Fort Worth, listen to 92.1 KTFW for some real country and, when in Dallas, listen to 95.3 for some country/Americana.

chris says:

People listen to zps? Or give a flip about the same tired radio personalities from the same tired clear channel formats? Who knew? Fm radio is a snoooooze.

John says:

guess I can turn my ipod back on in the car.

Don Abbott says:

For those that missed it, the golden days were, of course, the Zoo. 2008 DFW radio sounds like a day-timer 500 watt AM station in Minot in comparison.

Dallas Can't Academy says:

Don't forget about Cowboy 1190AM.

Tim Covington says:

I agree with Jim. I listened to Lone Star in the beginning. But, as they played more and more of the same tired old classic rock (Stevie Ray Vaughn had more than three songs), I went back to my MP3 player and 95.3.

JC says:

Hi. I'm so cool, I'm going to talk about how I'm so over listening to FM radio. In fact, I'm going to go listen to satellite radio and my ipod at the same time!! Take that, losers!

Catbird says:

Obama 2008!

Pete says:

I moved to Dallas in 1968 after getting my degree at the University of Texas at Austin. I packed what I could into one footlocker and made the journey via Greyhound bus. One of the many valuables I left behind in the care of my younger brother was my record player (they were called record players, not turntables, back then) and my record collection. The one album I really missed--the one I had played constantly before relocating--was The Band's "Music From Big Pink." One of my first purchases when I arrived in Dallas was a battery-powered portable radio that I had to hold against the window of my second floor Oak Cliff apartment to get reception. One of the DJs on the only FM rock station in town gave out a phone number to call in with requests. I raced to the phone, called and asked the DJ to play "Chest Fever" by The Band. He said they had just played a version of the song by Three Dog Night. I immediately threw my radio out the second story window, watched as it smashed to pieces on the concrete below and have never really listened to FM radio in Dallas since.

Victor says:

Another change, what a pity. I was hoping this format would become what it was back in the days of KAFM. There are tons of good Texas rock/country/alt bands with absolutely no hope of getting airtime anywhere. Well more voicetracking is to be expected I guess.

GGAllinThicke says:

I have used this handle for years and years. I believe it was a year or so after G.G.'s death. I have a great animated gif avatar that I use on other forums that combines the two polar opposites.

Please don't replace Redbeard with a neckbeard. They are almost as bad as a Chris Chris.

Ima Fraud says:

Well Redbeard you can always start a ZZ Top Tribute Band since Tribute bands are all the rage in Dallas......Maybe you can take Sweet Greggo's slot on the Hardline

johan says:

Redbeard was a beating in the 1980's and the 1990's so I assume he was still a beating in 2008. His fake enthusiasm and fawning over mediocre bands made me want to hurl back in the day. I remember during his last go-round here in the mid-1990's, he kissed the asses of Deep Blue Something so hard during a remote he probably left a permanent beard imprint on their butts --- you would have thought he had landed the surviving members of Led Zeppelin on his tired show.

But never mind that. Clear Channel loves them some nostalgia, which is evident in their 30-year-old playlists on their monopoly of radio stations. Does "Radar Love" need to be played every again? Apparently that's what they think we want to hear through the multitude of audience surveys they do. Well guess what, Jack-asses? Those survey respondents never say they want to hear songs by new bands because you never play them --- new music is never top of mind for Dallas radio listeners because they never hear any.

The same goes for recycled DJs. You think we'll get excited about the return of Redbeard, believing we'll tune in to hear some imagined icon of our youth. Those who did tune in likely soon remembered that he sucked in the first place.

So keep up with the stale radio, sit back, and watch your listenership plummet.

Ever wonder if red's beard has some food up in there from their first tour?

Ron Daley says:

I had stopped listening to my Sirius radio, once I started listening to Lone Star (4 months ago). I love the mix they have (had) and the people on it. It was a group of "old friends" playing songs and artists I really like. Even the occasional country song was good. No where else can you hear Ray Wylie Price, Robert Earl Keen, George Thoroghgood, Stevie Ray Vaughan and Bob Seger, Molly Hatchet all in the same hour and be turned on to "new" music at the same time...

While Jon Dylan was never a "favorite", he's a good personality, none the less. Bo and Jim have always been funny, but I miss the other characters from the show - Ninja, Prof. B Woogy, etc.

Hearing Redbeard back in Dallas was what locked it in for me. So many stories, so many connections, so much knowledge. I really missed him and do again!

Now, with the talent change and the programming changes going on, already, I'll be going back to Sirius. Maybe they'll come out with an "outlaw country"/"southern rock"/"texas songwriters" format.

Gary in Ft Worth says:

Hey, when it comes to radio personalities on music stations, who doesn't feign a little personality lobotamy? Ever listen in the a.m.,? Sick. I personally love the format change at KZPS. Bo and Jim, see above. As for the ticket, I was a day one P1, for years, until I got sick of the sophmoric, fart joke weirdness of them all. They've a strong following, and I suspect some of the comments here are posted by employees! Redbeard was easy going and his "in the studio" stuff insightful and enjoyable. He was, and is about as sincere as an radio personality can be. He will be back, and bigger than ever, with satelite radio. You ticket heads, go bite your self!
