AMC Loews Cityplace 14 Has Actually Been Sold. To Whom? Dunno Yet.

As noted, oh, minutes ago, Dallasites will have one fewer moviegoing option come Sunday, as AMC is closing its Loews Cityplace 14. Turns out, the property is owned by Rosebud Properties, which has actually sold the theater, according to the woman who answered the phone there.
Only, to whom the property's been sold is still a mystery: Rosebud president and CEO Don Farris is out of the office, and the woman who answered the phone said she wasn't sure whether she was able to release that information in his absence. That said, she has promised to get back to Unfair Park before day's end with more information. Holding ... breath ... starting ... now. --Robert Wilonsky

Good riddance, hope you bring a gun and bullet proof vest if you ever wanted to go to this movie theater. My friends purse was stolen out from under her seat there, then they drove off in her car as we watched, dumped it at a building behind the theater after it was emptied out, we just happened to drive around and find it. Theater didn't care or try to stop the thieves, probably because it was their brothers that did it.
They need to blow up that whole development and build it out without those low rent hangers on.
Posted On: Wednesday, Jan. 2 2008 @ 3:58PMYou had to see this coming. You can go down the road to NorthPark and get a far nice experience, for one. They weren't going to throw all that money at the AMC there and then keep that money pit open.
Plus, with the new residential whatsits going in the towers, that pad just became worth way more as a blank slate than it is now.
Posted On: Wednesday, Jan. 2 2008 @ 4:10PMSure, Cityplace 14 was a ghetto theater where one always had to be aware of their surroundings --- both inside and outside of the building --- to avoid being the victim of a felon. And sure, the theater featured all of the lowest common denominator fare cranked out by Hollywood.
Still, I'm not going to be able to get into the Magnolia for $4 for to see the first show of the day on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. And I'm unlikely scratch the itch to see lots of stuff blow up in a movie shown at the Angelika.
So rest in peace Cityplace 14, my gangsta brother.
Posted On: Wednesday, Jan. 2 2008 @ 4:34PMI work behind said theater and must say its become an eyesore due to the clientel. This theater would be great for an Alamo Drafthouse-type development and a decent shopping center to boot. I hope they clean up the property and make sure the damn kids in the school behind it dont loiter around the property with their idiot buddies or thug parents.
Posted On: Wednesday, Jan. 2 2008 @ 4:35PMChurches almost always buy up vacant movie theatre lots. Something about the stadium seating makes people in the top row that much closer to the main guy (or gal), depending on your beliefs. Hallelujah!
Posted On: Wednesday, Jan. 2 2008 @ 4:42PMNuts! Sh!typlace was the best place to see a whole afternoon worth of movies for the price of one admission. I dont think anybody "working" there seemed to care.
Posted On: Wednesday, Jan. 2 2008 @ 4:57PMI'm curious... how does ANY movie theater that happens to be situated on an expensive piece of real estate actually turn a profit? Most of the box office receipts usually go to the studios and production companies.
I know that movie theaters in LA and NYC have higher ticket prices and also charge for parking, but a venue like Loews Cityplace 14 is basically just a big popcorn stand sitting on five acres of prime real estate.
How did it even last this long? And how the fuck did it stay open this long without offering Dr. Pepper at the concession stand?
Posted On: Wednesday, Jan. 2 2008 @ 8:11PMTriple good riddance. Worst use of a prime lot ever in this neighborhood. Ask any DPD officer what they think of the management of this thug dive. Totally uncooperative, uncaring, irresponsible bunch of loser owners. Ever. Tear the damn thing down and build a Kohls. Or. Anything. Else.
Posted On: Wednesday, Jan. 2 2008 @ 9:38PMI was also a crime victim there. My car was broken into and stereo stolen while watching a "Mommy and Me" matinee or whatever it was they called the movie showings where you could take a baby. What offended me was that the crooks were so darn stupid, they broke out the window and caused way more damage than the (admittedly very good Alpine) stereo was worth. Hellooo, has jimmying a lock become a lost art?
Despite that, I'll miss the place. My husband and I saw so many movies there, and as others have pointed out, the price was right and the explosions were plentiful.
Posted On: Wednesday, Jan. 2 2008 @ 9:57PMThis movie theatre was geared towards those who enjoy interactive movie experiences.
The movie was always secondary to those planning on where they were going for dinner, placing cell phone calls, or dissing boyfriend/girlfriend.
Posted On: Wednesday, Jan. 2 2008 @ 10:37PMI cant believe people get all worked up over a stupid movie theater. I guess since you live in Dallas where your idea of culture is hitting up North park Center or eating at the worst restaurants in america.
Posted On: Thursday, Jan. 3 2008 @ 1:53AMI've been going to that movie theater for the past 6 years and never once had a problem with it, nor saw any thugs or gangstas. Then again, I only went to the shows during the day, so that might have had something to do with it.
Posted On: Thursday, Jan. 3 2008 @ 9:25AMFrank's idea of culture is to capitalize incorrectly.
Posted On: Thursday, Jan. 3 2008 @ 10:11AMI watch movies in the safety of my own home with the doors locked, alarm on, blinds shut, my pit inside and my 9mm sitting on my lap.
Posted On: Thursday, Jan. 3 2008 @ 10:27AMI liked that theatre cause it was 2 stops away from me on the train. I admit it was pretty ghetto though. There weren't any more thugs or gangsters there then at any other movie theatre on a weekend. Does black teen equate to gangster for most of you?
Posted On: Thursday, Jan. 3 2008 @ 10:29AMBeing a former movie theatre owner - how can one make it on that spot - well its the rent! Theatres aren't charged the same rent as say an upscale retail shop. Thus that is how they "can make it" on a prime real estate location. Theatres also usually bring in positive foot traffic for restaurants etc.
Lest we all forget - last time I checked Loews Cityplace was not a stadium seating theatre. Loews Keystone - now owned by Regal - was - but not Cityplace. That too helped encourage lower attendance.

Good observation there Chad... I think you nailed it... Next thing you know is all those people who are rallying to "burn it down" are going to start complaining when the usual clientele of the former "Shittyplace Theatre" become regular patrons of the precious Angelika and Magnolia screens - Or, god forbid, NORTHPARK! Then they'll start charging a membership fee to the damn mall... (please folks, let's not forget, it's a damn MALL, not Champs Elysees).. (although the irony here is that Champs Elysees has turned into a Northparkesque avenue in recent years... and the natives are restless...) Ugh...
Posted On: Thursday, Jan. 3 2008 @ 11:33AMLaceyB: It's true about churches turning old movie theaters into more churches, and this is probably a good time for them to do it. This summer I went to visit an old movie theater at 300 Chisholm Place, in Plano, that I must have been to 500 times in the 80's as a kid, and have a zillion memories of; sneaking in, getting kicked out (seeing 'Poltergeist' for the first time!). Anyway, I wanted to see if their massive, staff-painted "classic faces of Hollywood" mural that used to loom above the lobby was still there -- I wanted to photograph it (their Marilyn was cross-eyed and their Bogart looked like a skinhead Barbara Streisand). I was prepared that the place might be closed or demolished...but instead it was a friggin' CHURCH! The building was exactly the same, inside and out, except it was all clean and white, and the mural was now plain drywall and fake potted plants, and the old candy concession stand was a big booth that had "Welcome to Temple Baptist!" brochures. The ticket booth had been converted into some kind of welcome booth contraption. Weird. I almost went back on a Sunday so I could just sit in that old theater and reminisce about doing whippets and sneaking into "The Blue Lagoon" to see Brooke Shields's boobs -- and have my soul saved.
Posted On: Thursday, Jan. 3 2008 @ 11:34AMFrank should go home.
I saw Will Smith at this theater. Never had a problem with crime. Wanted to punch a few patrons on cell phones. Greater fear for the haters. Where will these kids go now? A loss for a community. A gain for the live shop and eat developers.
My younger daughter and a group of her friends (13 & 14 year old kids) were standing out front one evening waiting for their rides home. These kids were just standing there talking and laughing when all of a sudden they were surrounded by a group of thugs. These guys zeroed in on one of the boys and started beating him. A few of the girls ran inside and told security what was going on. The security guards just ignored them. That was the last time any of them EVER went to Citiplace to see a movie. Thank goodness for Northpark. It may be a little more expensive but I'll gladly pay the extra money knowing my kids are in a safe environment that doesn't tolerate the gangster element.
I realize the kids that attacked that boy aren't likely to read this blog, but on the off chance one of them does, I'd like to say this to you. Hey scumbag, you're a real tough guy. It takes a real man to surround a group of little kids half your size and beat the hell out of one of them. I know your momma must be proud of you.
Good riddance to Citiplace.
Posted On: Thursday, Jan. 3 2008 @ 12:24PMThere are rezoning signs on the fence, suggesting a retail zone or apartment complex.
Seriously...those who are 'offended' that these 'thug types' (i see you mean minorities) even have the right to go to the movies and enjoy themselves like everyone else please get off your high horse. I live in the neighborhood around the theater...yes it is poorer than your precious Lakewood....yes there are more minorities (because they can't affort Lakewood). No they are not all thugs/gangstas (about 99% of them are not) and yes they enjoy spending time with friends and family watching movies. Surprisingly...they are people just like you! They'll just have to travel now a little further to your precious NorthPark to watch a good movie. At least AMC Northpark allows you to bring in food from the outside and eat it there. See you at the movies!!!
Posted On: Thursday, Jan. 3 2008 @ 3:19PMHey mike, not everyone in Lakewood feels that way - real Lakewooders send their kids to public school and have friends of all colors and economic levels.
Posted On: Thursday, Jan. 3 2008 @ 4:41PMYeesh, guys, I live in Lakewood, which apparently makes me a racist, but get real here. I seriously doubt some milk-white, hopped-up Mormon missionary decided to get off his bike and break my car window and steal my car stereo during a 10:45 a.m. matinee. (Everyone knows Mormons know how to jimmy locks properly, after all.
...Just kidding, all you LDS'ers out there!)
Before you start sneering and calling me a racist, please know this: I don't care if thug types go to the movies. Heck, I'd rather have 'em in the theater watching a movie than out in the parking lot breaking my car windows.
Posted On: Thursday, Jan. 3 2008 @ 5:34PMI'd like to say i used to work for this theatre and when we saw a problem. we attacked it head on. all of your accusations are false about being "ignored" and allowing a "gangster atmosphere". why don't yall go complain about the asian down the street who lets his dog crap on ur lawn...yeah...thats a big problem to i suspect for you huh?
Posted On: Friday, Jan. 4 2008 @ 3:50PMYeah I live across the street from the theater and there are thugs however for me it is the Stadium Seating that I'll go up to North Park for. That way when the young'ns talk or text it's a lot less noticeable. Oh, and no ones big head blocks your view. ;)
I liked the theater but there could be something a lot nicer in that huge spot. [pray]
Listen people I'm white, I have never had anyone break into my car, try to beat me up, or start any kind of drama with me any of the 30 plus times I went to Cityplace to view a movie. As for the people that are dumb enough to leave their kids at night in Dallas anywhere, Survival Of The Fittest, is all I have to say about that. The lady that left her purse under the seat is a moron too. If I had seen it there I would have taken it as well. Plus, I go to North Park all the time and the real crime there is people getting charged $200 for a pair of jeans that cost $5 at the most for materials and labor. There is something to be said though about being able to enjoy a carmel chocolate chip frappachino from Starbucks while I watch my movie!
Posted On: Sunday, Jan. 20 2008 @ 4:50PMHey ppl City Place is not that abd it was a great palce to watch a movie and ive never had a problem. Im Mexican but if anyone knows der waya round and isnt stupid enough to leave your things anywhere they can eb taken or leave your kids stay in the fornt of teh building ...u know wat ppl stay INSIDE and wait...tehre arnt more thugs than anywhere else ,,,jts wath ur movied o w.e u want and get out dat simple i dnt know wat the hell everyoens complaingin about if it was a awesome place....might be alil ghetto but if your rlly tahta fraid cross I-75 and ur in uptown mayb yall wont whine as much tehre
Posted On: Saturday, Jan. 26 2008 @ 4:25PMI had no idea this place closed as of this year. This theatre wasn't all that bad like some mentioned. It's no different or safer than any other theatre in the Dallas area, come on now get serious folks. Yeah it was mostly visited by teenagers and old senior citizens but, it actually looked pretty decent compared to some places farther North I have been to.
