A Giant Myth

Categories: Sports

Rocky’s trainer, ol’ Mick, alluded to it when he warned his love-struck boxer, “Women weaken legs!” I half-ass joked about it when I wrote, “It just doesn’t feel right.” But up in New York, the very unbiased (wink) media is latching on to Tony Romo’s weekend jaunt to Mexico with Jessica Simpson like a tangible edge worth a sack, two interceptions and three points.

Citing what he refers to as “the Simpson Factor” -- clever and catchy, no? -- New York Daily News (and former Dallas Morning News'er) columnist Gary Myers predicts a 28-24 Giants victory over the Cowboys Sunday. “The Giants are peaking,” Myers somehow deducts of a team that lost two of its last three regular season games before beating the punchless Tampa Bay Buccaneers last weekend. “ … The Cowboys are vulnerable.” C’mon youz-gize, even those of us who’ll find any old reason to post a pic of Jessica – see there, did it again -- know using the relationship as a legit factor in Sunday’s outcome is mega-market moronic

Romo is downplaying it. Jason Witten is downplaying it. Coach Wade Phillips is downplaying it. But up in NYC? They’re playing it up. And then some.

But taking a quick detour isn’t new to the Cowboys. Remember Barry Switzer -- before his second game as head coach -- skipping up to Arkansas to watch his son, Doug, quarterback Missouri Southern on a Saturday night before a game against Houston in 1994? Before Super Bowl XXVII in Pasadena, quarterback Troy Aikman skipped out of a media session early to take yours truly on a tour of his old UCLA stomping grounds. And just this year, Wade spent a night preparing for the finale against the Washington Redskins taking in his daughter Tracy’s role in Charlie Wilson’s War at the AMC Valley View 16 theater in North Dallas. “Don’t mind me if I start clapping when she comes on the screen,” Wade alerted nearby patrons.

Sorry, New York, but a major part of Romo’s success is his unorthodox ... iness? Poor pedigree. Sidearm motion. Awkward footwork. On-field gambling addiction. Pre-game whoopee. It’s what got him where he is, and it’s what will help him get past the Giants and into the NFC Championship.

Go ahead and paint Romo as aloof. We all know he’s just loose. Right? --Richie Whitt
