The Ballad of Jerry Dirkx

Categories: Local Music

If I may direct your attention to our musically inclined sibling DC9 at Night, Darryl Smyers has a terrific interview with one of my earliest rock and roll idols: Jerry Dirkx, founding member of such local bands as Teenage Queers and the legendary Telefones, whose 1980 VVV release Vibration Change remains a new-wave landmark 'round these parts. (Rock-Ola!, which came out a year later, less so.)

Jerry, now going by Gerard, is at long last making his solo bow tomorrow at Opening Bell Coffee -- where, alas, he will not offer up "The Ballad of Jerry Godzilla." So we will. Kinda? --Robert Wilonsky
