Not much early blogging today: I'm scheduled to appear on Dallas County Commissioner John Wiley Price's radio show at 8 a.m.: Liberation Nation, sitting at KNON-FM (89.3) on your transistor's tuner. The subject: this week's cover story, about architect William Sidney Pittman and his Knights of Pythias Temple on Elm Street -- an Unfair Park fave. Tune in, lest I have to blog it. --Robert Wilonsky

Tartare says:

Hopefully this doesn't turn in to "Knights of the Pyrrhic"

pyr·rhic (pir′ik)noun "a war dance of the ancient Greeks"

Where each of us spends more time lamenting the problems of the past instead of creating a solution for the future. The Preservation Society's lack of awareness regarding this building is sad not surprising having seen so many other historic building demolished over the last 25 years. They succumb to demolition technically due to a lack of city oversight or lack of a demolition permit, but moreso when the developers realize no one is really going to fight for preservation or prosecute for demolition.

Here's a crazy idea, why not provide greater incentives, financial, tax or otherwise for preservation. Clearly what the public and private sectors are doing now hasn't met this need for this property.

chad says:

It's worth noting that Tiffany (i won't use her last name since i haven't asked her) from D.E.E.P. is the one who started this latest push. She's been working with Kathrine Seale and Preservation Dallas for months.

Also, Mark Roberts from the Deep Ellum Association took a lot of pictures of the decay and put together a packet that raised a lot of eyebrows with Preservation Dallas.

Just another example of the Deep Ellum community working on their neighborhood.

Chris says:

This is one of the "cornerstone" buildings that needs to be saved down in my neighborhood. Why westdale has sat on this property and let it decay, when it can be used for so much is beyond me. Im certainly hoping preservation dallas puts the breaks on letting this building from sliding further into disrepair .

In fact, this would be the perfect place for the long-in gestation "Dallas Music Museum" thats been on the backburner.

Bubba says:

They keep sitting on this thing hoping it will just fall down and /or go away. What is it w/ former SMU football stars anyway? I've only met two, Chuck and Doak Walker. They both acted like they own the world. Word of advice, it's not very becoming so get over yourself. Let's hope the citizens of Dallas continue to fight for what is rightfully all of our history. Thank you Robert for the great cover story and follow up on KNON.
