Public Appeal to Michael A. Lindenberger, transportationologist, Dallas Morning News:

I called you yesterday seeking comment on a story you had in The Dallas Morning News on Wednesday saying that the North Texas Tollway Authority may have to ask Dallas taxpayers for more money for the Trinity River toll road. You said in the story that NTTA Chairman Paul Wageman revealed "last month" that the $84 million commitment from the 1998 bond issue might not be enough.

This is, of course, big news, since it makes a big fat pants-on-fire liar of the mayor, who swore he had looked the tollway authority people in the eyes and was "very comfortable" that they will pay everything above $84 million.

I am writing about this in my column for next week's newspaper. Unless dissuaded by the evidence, I intend to impugn your ethics as a journalist and possibly raise questions about your parentage for knowing about this before the election but not getting it into the paper until the day after the vote.

In the past I have been accused of failing to discover previously published Dallas Morning News stories because I did not search for them in sufficiently arcane depositories. Or is it suppositories? At any rate, please call the number I left you and tell me if I am in error in my impression that you retained this story and only expelled it after the election results were in.

And really, this is the time for us to pull together and just be friends, O.K.? --Jim Schutze

"last month"

This little fun fact would have cost them the election if it had come out last month.

I guess that is why it didn't come out.

DMN = Propaganda

I didn't trust my own eyes the first time I read that story, so I went back and read it again.

Sharon Boyd says:

DMN sat on story about Tom Hicks giving Mr. & Mrs. Con Jerk $700K worth of stock options in one of his companies for her serving as a board member for a couple of months. They released the story a few months after the arena election, although they had the information before the election.

The reporter told me it was "public financial information" and my campaign people could have found it. I asked why the news wasn't reported before the January election when it was "news", and he said they didn't want to influence the election.

Larry says:

Not me, Wylie...this makes me want to put my sap-gloved fist through that old Decherd pig's ugly, smug face (with his stupid little horn-rimmed glasses on, preferably).

What a complete JOKE of a newspaper...umpteenth generation of family ownership/management displaying not a clue of business sense (but the usual overabundance of arrogance and self-serving)...editorial board (e.g., the ditzy blonde, Ms. Willey) with lots of arrogance as well, combined with truly mediocre educational credentials and lacking even an ounce of independent thought (and many would say precious little intelligence...WOW, what a package!)...local news columnists (Blow, being a prime example) uniformly consisting of mindless, barely literate and indisputable flunkies..."reporters" who editorialize at every opportunity and seek to find "dirt" on the subjects of their articles (Bush and Tomaso, e.g.), and "editors" who think that is just fine (congratulations for being a whore, Mr. Rodrigue).

It's no small wonder their readership numbers are in a free fall. They could not possibly go out of business soon enough. Dallas deserves a REAL daily newspaper it can be proud of.

Majus says:

Sharon's comment about Kirk's stock options is just proof that Kirk is a paid shill. The same holds true about Leppert.

Do they have no shame? No ethics? Obviously not.

The sad fact is that at the time Kirk was in office, in spite of what to many was so obvious, too many voters bought into his bought-and-paid-for lies.

The taxpayers just keep getting raped, over and over, by the same sleazy white billionaires who keep on lining their coffers with our hard-earned money.

There is one thing I encourage every voter in this city and county to NOT do -- Vote Early. What better way could there be to pre-determine the way votes are going than to be privy to the results of those early votes.

Please don't try to tell me that it can't be done because it's against the law. These people pay no attention to laws.

I think it's time the FBI started digging into the corrupt politics of this city and county.

Just when I thought Schutze had settled in for his long winter nap, the DMN had to go and poke him with a long stick. When will they ever learn?

Lori says:

Five years ago I attended one of the "public" (non-publicized) meetings for the Trinity park after a city employee told me about it.

And yes, I took notes. Which I just dug out after reading this.

The total estimate for the tollway, park, lakes, and wetlands was $751.5 million. The budget they had at that point was already 26.7 million short.

They assured the crowd that public donations would cover the rest.

I'll give you three guesses where those "public" donations were supposedly coming from.

And as a side note- there's a lot of question marks in my notes and a recollection of some terrible presentation materials. One of the highlights are the words:

Flood control?
No studies.
No data.
All imagination.

Mark Spence says:

I've had to say it about Jim before, Amen!

I'm sure Elbert Hubbard was thinking of people like Jim and Angela when he wrote, "there is a man whose form should be cast in deathless bronze and the statue placed in every college of the land. It is not book-learning young men need, nor instruction about this and that, but a stiffening of the vertebrae which will cause them to be loyal to a trust, to act promptly, concentrate their energies: do the thing-"

Oh good gawd Joey Dauben. Aren't you too busy muckraking in Ellis County to fool with us up here in the big city? This has nothing to do with Gene Knize or Dan Altman. Sheesh. Oh yeah, you're a serious journalist now & I guess this offends your sensibilities..... that or you're just trying to make a buck, as usual.
