Another season, another first-round flame-out. Thanks to FC Dallas’ come-from-ahead loss to the Houston Dynamo Friday night, our teams’ playoff pratfalls continue to continue. Let’s see, the Cowboys, Mavericks, Stars, Desperados and now FC Dallas all failed to get out of the first round of the playoffs in their most recent playoff appearances. And then, of course, there are the Rangers, who haven’t sniffed the post-season this millennium.

Our soccer squad squandered a big lead against Houston, encapsulating its season’s spiral. FC Dallas, which hasn’t won a playoff round since it was the Dallas Burn in 1999, won only two of its last 10 games. An injury caused it to miss out on David Beckham, keeping attendance flat at around 15,000 per game. And even the August acquisition of heralded Brazilian midfielder Denilson failed to energize interest or production as he scored just one goal in eight games. To succeed in this busy sports landscape -- and remember, Dallas isn’t a sports town, but rather a winners town -- soccer has to be special. FC Dallas has been anything but. --Richie Whitt
