DMN Managing Editor Accuses Schutze of "Torturing the Facts." Wuh-Oh.

Fri Nov 30, 2007 at 03:21:41 PM

Jim, come quick -- George Rodrigue has that answer you've been looking for! Seems he was persuaded by your charm and good looks -- and because you're "a colorful and persuasive writer," which is why poor George just had to go and "defend" his paper's "honor." Oh, wait. I just read the whole thing. Jim, please, don't read it. Your head will 'splode.

To our Friends, expect Dr. Schutze's response before day's end. Just guessing. --Robert Wilonsky

What "good newspaper" would that be?

Dallas Morning News: Which Republican will they endorse tomorrow?
By Byron LaMasters

I'm always amused with the process in which the Dallas Morning News endorsements are cushioned to appear nonpartisan, when a closer examination clearly yields a strong Republican bias. And they continue the trend this year...

Tuesday, September 7:

DMN enthusiastically endorses Republican Criminal District Court Judge Cliff Stricklin over Democrat Don Adams in a highly contested race.

DMN enthusiastically endorses Republican Criminal District Couty Judge Robert Francis over Democrat Carter Thompson in a highly contested race.

Saturday, September 11:

DMN wholeheartedly endorses George W. Bush's policy (or lack thereof, rather) over John Kerry's .

Monday, September 13:

DMN endorses Democrat Lon Burnam as the "better of two weak candidates" for State Representative in an uncompetitive race in a 70% Democratic district.

"Massacre" at Dallas Morning News
October 27, 2004
Journalists of Color Among 60 to 70 Laid Off
The Dallas Morning News laid off 60 to 70 people today in what some were calling a "massacre" that involved several long-serving employees, including Ira Hadnot, the president of the Dallas/Fort Worth Association of Black Communicators, and at least nine other journalists of color.

Or this one?

In a September 1 Dallas Morning News column, Austin bureau chief Wayne Slater wrote that conservative radio host Hugh Hewitt "sees the freewheeling mix of radio and the Internet as a potent force that has undermined what he calls the creaky monopoly of liberal mainstream media," adding: "The liberal group Media Matters, no fan of Mr. Hewitt's politics, nonetheless dubbed him 'a Renaissance Man of the New Media universe.' " In fact, it was not Media Matters that described him as such, but rather Roger Aronoff, a media analyst for the conservative media "watchdog" group Accuracy in Media, in a September 15, 2005, column.

Or this one?

Burka's piece got immediate attention from Texas reporters. William McKenzie, an editorial columnist at The Dallas Morning News, wrote a 700-word piece in the paper's February 10 issue that echoed Burka's position. He concluded by writing, "All I know is that I want Governor Bush back, too. Soon."

W back soon? With his waterboard and all?

Geez, I could go on and on and on.

I think the word "good" confuses me. If it comes down to the integrity of DMN or Jim Schutze -- Wait, I'll finish that thought as soon as I stop this convulsing laughter.

Brian says:

George does exactly what Jim predicted at the end of this article: claimed journalistic integrity for printing the quote, regardless of the timing.

I'm glad he's getting so much pressure to respond to Jim's accusations. That means people are paying attention. He would ignore this if he thought the DMN was getting away with it.

And methinks he needs to get off his high horse. His attitude seems to be similar to Leppert's: we will tell you what you need to know because we understand this much better than you little people.

OK, in the spirit of the '07 Cowboys, I'm getting my popcorn ready for Jim's reply.

LeeDog says:

What an ass. His drivel is insulting.

religion of bacon says:

He starts out by calling Schutze a pig, and then claims he's defending the DMN's "honor?" [sic] Real class act there, George.

As the saying goes, "you know you're over the target when you start taking flak."

D Mills says:

"If costs rise, if NTTA asks for more money, and if the city declines to pay it, there would be many possibilities...it could scale back the project..."

Yeah, I bet they could think of some great ways to scale this project down.

Sarah says:

I've hated the News for a while, but now I'm ready for a full boycott, Web site and all.

Taylor says:

I would give props to Pop-up Morning News as I was only hit me with one pop-up and a flash ad...but that flash ad hid the close button and I had to click it several times before it left.

And call me crazy but are we really supposed to belive a "handshake deal" is what to run with?? Sam Merton grilled Lie-pert over this in October (Which Pop-up ignores) he uses the tired right-wing "If we attack the other side noone will ask us to answer the questions they pose to us" argument, only to offer excuses when he does tackle the question.

Doesn't matter if you wrestle a pig or not, the reality is what will come into everyones living room (Depsite Pop-ups many attempts) and make itself known is not the pig but that pink elephant called truth, the road has to get paid for and Lie-pert can only spin it for so long.

To James White: Don't forget how Belo handled the last Govenor race, how they limited it to one debate, Belo controlled (And limited) access, then endorsed Perry who has this wonderful vision of tolling the crap out of our state. And they wonder why I refer to myself as an "Ex-Republican"

knottygirl says:

Pass the popcorn, Brian!

Hoo boy, where do I begin with the things that bugged me about that response? Let's see here:

*Maybe the tollroad won't be built. [which would, according to the vote no scare tactics, lead to unbreakable traffic gridlock, economic stagnation, and an acceleration of global warming so severe that we'll all be owning beachfront property and fighting off the Houston evacuees]
*Would it really be so wrong if the city did have to cough up more than $84 million? [hell yes, you dork, why do you think so many of us were so damn mad and wanting to vote on this? we knew a bait and switch was in the works, we just knew it]
*Would we prominently use a month-old quote if we had quashed the story? [um, who besides Schutze was gonna call you on it?]

I did like the pig-wrasslin' story. Here's my response: You can put lipstick on a pig, but it's still a big fat DCC-North Dallas-powerbrokers-sucking-up pig.

chris says:

Regardless of what you think of the DMN, their website and every blog on it is really some of the most pathetic websites I've ever had the misery to use. Rarely does anything function properly on it and it's almost unreadable at times with text spilling out of the margins and comments not working. For a major newspaper it's a has a pretty amateur site.

Bethany says:

Torturing the facts. Tsk, tsk.

Is that via waterboarding, or bamboo schutze under the fingernails?

Jack Jett says:

Does Rod Dreher pretty much run the joing over there, while he is not condemming other religions to hell?

Perhaps he can pray your torture away.

jack jett

Mike says:

Its hard to imagine Rod Dreher running anything Jack. Over on his religion blog "Apple lemon update" he's being pussy whipped by 2 of his girlfriends and an Apple store clerk.
