Dallas' Anti-War Vet Gets Dem Presidential Candidates to Blog. GOPs, Not So Interested.
A couple of times in recent months, I've mentioned Brandon Friedman, a Dallasite who served as an infantry officer in the U.S. Army’s 101st Airborne Division in Afghanistan and Iraq. He's currently vice chairman of VoteVets.org and the author of the awfully good war memoir The War I Always Wanted: The Illusion of Glory and the Reality of War. Well, yesterday Friedman's name showed up in this story about VoteVets.org's new blog: VetVoice.com, on which the group of anti-war veterans has asked all the presidential candidates to address "what they would do on military and veterans' issues as President of the United States," Friedman writes on the site.
Friedman's editing the site, to which Democratic candidates John Edwards, Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, Chris Dodd, Joe Biden and Bill Richardson all posted pieces yesterday -- or, at least, pieces to which their names were affixed. Only one Republican candidate took up Friedman on his offer: Texan Ron Paul, of course. Wrote Friedman yesterday, the site's aimed at everyone -- "whether you're a troop, a veteran, a spouse, a parent, or just a concerned American." --Robert Wilonsky
