Dallas Morning News managing editor George Rodrigue just accused you of "lunacy." Called you a "polemicist." Says you "demonize." Insists you are "no longer acting as a journalist." And he just hates my headline. Says it wasn't "civil." Oh, why do I get the feeling George Rodrigue ain't seen nothing yet. --Robert Wilonsky

I find Jim's "gonzo journalism" style of writing to be absolutely necessary within the context of this ongoing discussion. The DMN is shamelessly piling on the slick PR bullshit disguised as "real" journalism, so Schutze is entirely justified in framing this debate in the voice of the people, rather than in the voice of Belo stockholders. When this thing is all over, it will be Jim Schutze's unbiased perspective that will be the barometer in which the success or failure of the issue will ultimately be judged.

Yeah mediawonk, I read it. I felt dirty afterwards and had to go take a shower but I did read it. Those DMN guys have come unhinged. If you have read the many examples of the slanted reporting on this issue or if you have followed the fact about the Trinity then you know the DMN has been busted. Caught red-handed robbing the voters of Dallas of the truth with their omissions, half-truths and out right deceptions. ( ie., floodway VS, floodplain ) George did his best to twist the facts again but no, I don't think he did a very good job. I think the DMN is really showing their ass now.
Jay, just in case you're not being a smartass, George's name is Rodrigue, not Rodriguez.
Did any of you actually take the time to read Rodrigue's entire column? He actually did a pretty good job of refuting Jim's claims. I like Jim as a writer (never met him) and I've always appreciated the fact he provided a strong alternative voice in this town, but lately he has gone over the edge on this issue. Eric Celeste's "batshit crazy" description seems to fit, particularly on some of Jim's more recent blog posts.

I think the DMN is starting to fray at the edges. This was my post to "Ask An Editor" this morning entitled "George, George, George" "Our stories speak for themselves. Anyone who reads them � and they're all available on our Web site � can see that we take great pains to talk to all sides and to fully explore their claims," managing editor George Rodrigue said. The George I knew who was a bulldog during the Lori Palmer/Paul Fielding race would be ashamed to say that. When I was leading the opposition in 1998, Belo reporters would tell me their coverage was being changed, quashed, slanted. I have been amazed at the paper. You ought to be filing PAC papers because your coverage is so one-sided. And doing a story on Schutze-- come on -- shows how desperate you guys are. If the Yes vote wins on Nov. 6, this will have been just one more of the stories that has helped DMN ride into irrelevance.
Now it's multiple attempts at character assassination. Is this where Karl Rove is working now? Somebody must have a lot riding on this issue to get so many people showing their asses in public.
Why do you keep leaving the "z" off of the end of George's name? Is he French? Are you racist? Should I "Ask a Mexican"?
Keep up the good work Jim. Comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable.
