Days Before His "Beard-A-Fit," The Dada Doorman Sends His Thanks

Wed Oct 24, 2007 at 12:22:19 PM

Club Dada doorman John "Beard" Brewer phoned with some heartfelt thanks for those Friends who've posted their kind words in recent days, following his hospitalization in October 12 following a seizure. "It's real touching," Beard says. "I always thought people thought I was a prick because I made them show me their IDs and pay their cover." He laughs. "Aw, I'm kiddin'."

Docs have yet to pinpoint the reason for the seizure, but he tells Unfair Park that on October 12, around 7 p.m., he was getting ready to go down to Dada for work. But he never made it: Beard says he was "laying there 16, 18 hours" before his daughter found him and called for an ambulance. "I feel great now," he says, still unsure of how it happened. "I have high blood pressure, and I knew I was diabetic and that's being addressed. But the doctors did a spinal tap, a CAT scan and brain wave scan -- and I do have a brain, believe it or not." When he arrived at Parkland Memorial Hospital, he was in acute respiratory failure and had to be put on a ventilator; he was released Friday afternoon.

As we mentioned last week, Beard doesn't have health insurance to cover the costs of those costly tests, and Amanda Newman's arranged the "Beard-A-Fit" Sunday to raise some much-needed scratch. Here's the complete list of bands playing and the times they're set to take the stage, and note that it's all-ages and that entry's a minimum of $10, but you're welcome to pay more. Note that there has been a last-minute addition: Brave Combo will also play at 6 p.m. Says Beard: "I'm lucky to have so many good friends." --Robert Wilonsky
