"He Was My Hero."

The week began with the horrific news that one of Dallas' most beloved and gifted musicians had been shot and killed, for reasons still to be unraveled -- which has stopped few from debating them. Now, the week ends with the funeral of Carter Albrecht, at 2 p.m. today at Parkway Hills Baptist Church in Plano, between Park Boulevard and Parker Road off the Dallas North Tollway.

On the eve of burying their son, Ken and Judy Albrecht spoke at great length to KTVT-Channel 11's Jay Gormey. Only a few soundbites made it onto last night's newscast, including his parents' incredibly compassionate comments regarding blues musician Will "Smokey" Logg, who shot Albrecht when he believed the Sorta multi-instrumentalists was trying to break into his East Dallas home at 4 a.m. Monday.

"I know that he and his wife were very frightened. It was obviously dark, and they could not tell who it was," said Judy. "I wish he hadn't had a gun. I wish he hadn't fired. But I don't know what I would have done."

"They didn't invite someone, at that time in the morning, to be kicking at their door. Whatever action he took, that was a decision he had to make at that time," Ken Albrecht said. "He had a house to protect, a wife to protect, and my heart just goes out to them."

KTVT, however, has the extended interview available on its Web site. It contains some 25 minutes' worth of material, during which Ken talks about his son with such ease and grace and warmth -- and with the rueful smile of a man for whom happy memories will now have to make do -- that it absolutely breaks your heart. --Robert Wilonsky
