FDA Looking Into Carter Albrecht's "Case"

Categories: News

I just got off a plane in Toronto, for the Toronto International Film Festival, only to find in my inbox a link to this piece from a New York Times blog today about Carter Albrecht's death and the possible cause of his uncharacteristically violent behavior on Monday morning. This is the graph that sticks out:

The label released by the Food and Drug Administration, which has pledged to look into the Albrecht case, rates aggression, mood swings and abnormal thinking as “infrequent” side effects, which is a step above the “rare” ones — an important distinction, according to Sidney M. Wolfe, director of Public Citizen’s Health Research Group.

Perhaps this has been everywhere today; I haven't looked. But, regardless, this is stunning news: The FDA, according to The Paper of Record, is looking into Chantix and what part it played in this sad nightmare. --Robert Wilonsky

Update: The Dallas police have released the 911 call from Monday morning; it can be heard here, for those so inclined.
