AA Engages in Some Extra Credit

• I'm not going to lie to you "nmlhats" (animal hats?) - I don't know what the heck that phrase legally means. I suspect it's what Texans call a high-fallutin' way of saying that there paper is good gubmint money. I don't think it obligates a merchant or private citizen to sell any product or service they don't want to sell, whether your money is green or silver. If I were to really parse it, and again this is not meant in any way be a legal interpretation because I'm just having fun, I'd say that you are not in our debt until we hand you the headphones. So if we don't want your cash we don't hand you the headphones, and your not in our debt, so we don't have to take the currency you tender. It's all as clear as the windows on the Federal Reserve Building now, isn't it? Best, TW

• Say, Tim Wagner, how can the airlines get away with this? Isn't our good old, cold, hard cash "legal tender for all debts, public and private"? I just double checked, and those words are printed on all my paper money, but maybe yours is different. How can they just refuse to take cash, I mean, in a legal sense? By the way, Tim Wagner, my husband is also a member of the fourth estate and he appreciates AA's PR machine as usually responsive and professional, even when it's about bad news.

• Your wish is... First, we test a lot of things. Some get implemented later on, some don't. Keep that in mind. If customer feedback and revenues say "don't do it," we don't do it. Credit and debit card transactions are proliferating to the point of ubiquity, and our customers have told us already that they like the option of having the credit card readers onboard. We selected San Francisco for a couple of reasons: 1) It's a market with a fair number of frequencies; 2) It's a market that operates to a variety of short, distant and coast-to-coast destinations. We get a good mix of customers to tell us what they think. And finally, if we can relieve our flight attendants of the glamorous job of making change for a plane load of passengers... two words.
