What Would Diana Eat?

Categories: Dish

Darren McGrady is the so-called "Royal Chef" -- because, as he's quick to remind you on his Web site, he spent "11 years at Buckingham Palace and 4 years until the tragic accident, as personal chef to Princess Diana." He's lived in Dallas since 1998, working as a personal chef and offering cooking classes, and he's been making the media rounds in recent days talking about the 10th anniversary of Diana's death (on August 31). Just yesterday, for instance, the chef appeared in the two-hour TV Guide Channel doc Diana: Memories of a Princess, a shorter version of which debuts tonight. (I only know this from reading McGrady's blog -- swear.)

The timing's good, to say the least: Last month McGrady published Eating Royally: Recipes and Remembrances from a Palace Kitchen, which includes many of the Queen and Diana's favorite dishes. But McGrady's also turned the book into a generous gesture: He says here he donated "his entire advance from the book" to the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric Aids Foundation in honor of his former boss. But if you're too cheap to kick in for the cause, some of his recipes are available here. And, yes, he too has a son named Harry. --Robert Wilonsky
